Hi all,

Hoping you can give me some advice. I'm going to have an opportunity to shoot a concert tonight (Stars playing at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD), and was hoping to get some advice/recommendations on what sort of shooting settings and lenses I should be using. I'll apparently have a press pass so I may have access to shoot from a variety of locations.

For reference, here's some photos from their gallery to give you an idea of what the venue is like:

For me, I have the following equipment:
Canon T2i

Canon 18-55mm IS kit lens

Canon 55-250mm IS lens

Canon 50mm/f1.8 lens

Would definitely appreciate any advice/tips you can offer.

Thanks!

First contact the venue and see if you will be allowed to take your camera in on the night.

I found the following on their FAQ page:-

"Q: What are your policies regarding photo/video/audio?
A: Photo and/or recording policies are at the bands discretion and change night to night. You may bring your camera with the understanding that you might need to check it with us for the duration of the show. Members of the press must have press passes pre-arranged in order to shoot during a show."

If you have links with the band get them to get you a press pass it will smooth things along.

Personally I like to use my camera in manual mode. I'd set the highest ISO possible in combination with my desired Aperture for DOF, and leave these settings fixed; and then get into the mind-set of carefully watching the lighting and adjusting the shutter speed for the lighting conditions as it changes. I personally would prefer a shot with noise, than one that is blurry.

I would start out with the metering mode set to Spot.

Shoot in RAW. Adjusting the white balance is sooooooooooo easy.

Shoot in RAW. Adjusting exposure is soooooooooooooooooo easy.

Regards, Mike

It's what I did with these. All at ISO 1000, F/2.8. And simply adjusted shutter for the exposure.
