I was taking pictures today with the S10 and I was putting the camera in and out of the camera case. One time when I took it out I noticed it was on. I must have accidentally turned it on when I put it in the case. It was on play so the lens did not extend.

My question is if the camera in the case turns on accidentally and the lens tries to extend and cannot will it harm the lens/camera? Has this happened to anyone? Is there a workaround other than taking the battery out of the camera every time (which is a real pain)?
Thanks in advance

There have been at least two instances reported in this forum of lenses extending while restricted. In both cases there was EXPENSIVE damage to the camera.

I would suggest that you buy a case that will not restrict the lense if it accidentally extends. A soft waist pouch seems to work for me. My camera has turned on in the pouch a couple of times and there was no damage except a little battery drain.

BTW it seems that Canon will not warranty the camera if it finds that damage was caused by a restricted lense.

I encountered this accident last week during my vacation. The lens extended about 3mm and is limited by the case. When I took it out, the top LCD shows E18. I simply turn it off and on again and it seems normal then....

As was pointed out in an earlier thread, a simple solution is to slide the battery door lock switch on the bottom of the camera to the unlock position. This prevents the camera from turning on. Once you are in the habit of using the switch, you won't miss any shots by forgetting to slide the switch back to the lock position. I use the switch every time I put my camera in the case.

Hope this helps.

Just a little tip, if you remember to leave the camera in "view" mode the lens will never extend even if you accidently turn the camera on..
