Should I wait for the 70D to release before purchasing a 60D?

If the rumors are true, Canon should be releasing or at least announcing the 70D this month. Would it be wise to wait until the 70D's release before buying a 60D? The 60D is currently $799, I don't want the price to go back up to $999 when I get the chance to buy one.

This is always a personal question. However, I can tell you what I would do. I would wait until the 70D announcement is made. Then I would compare the specs of the 60D with the 70D. You should still be able to get the 60D at the same price as now. If the 70D is worth the extra to you then go for it. But if the 60D has better value for you then get it. Remember, the determining factor is what has the better value for you not what anybody else says.

Again, for me I would almost surely get the 70D because I tend to want the very latest, even if it did not do anything better for me. Lots of people are like that. But the 60D is a fine camera and if it fits with your photography then don't let anyone talk you out of it. (I am waiting for the 7D2 because I want the latest -- but that is just me.)

I'm set on the 60D since i know I won't be able to afford the 70D unless it's less than $1000 and I doubt that's going to happen. I'm more worried about a price increase, however momentary it will be. Although I did just read that the 60D will be $100 off starting 3/3, hopefully I can snag one if that happens. I don't want the price to drop significantly after the 70D release and kick myself for not waiting. I appreciate your answer and honesty.

If there is any substance to the rumors 70D will be much more of camera, it will probably have MSRP to match D7100, and knowing Canon, it won't be available for a few months.

I'd at least wait until the price comes back down to $699. I just bought a 60D body from Amazon at that price on Feb 13.

On the other hand the release price is always singificantly higher and if you are prepared to wait a few months more, it is very likely to drop.

And I think that is very likely to happen once the 70D hits the streets. The 60D is quite old, we can expect the 70D quite soon.

It all boils down whether you are upgrading or whether this is your first SLR. If it is, I would get it now, as srping is approaching and you do not want to miss picture opportunities. If you have a camera already, I would wait....

I currently have a Canon Rebel 1000D. It's out-lived its shelf life and it's starting to have a few problems. I am wanting to upgrade it before it completely dies. I will probably wait for the 60D to drop back to $699 before purchasing it.

I'm in more of a rush to get this camera since my son's birthday is this month and I don't want my 1000D to die and not have a decent camera to use. Plus I'm going to a wedding in June and I'd like to have a nice camera to bring. I'll still keep my 1000D until it dies though. It's been a great starter camera.

This is a quite short lifespan for a camera given that the EOS 1000D was released in 2008 so it cannot be older than 5 years. My EOS 20D is still going strong and it is from 2006! I have to admit, however, that is is my second camera since 2008 when I bought an EOS 40D. However, it still gets quite heavy use on many weekends.

If the lifespan of the Rebels is indeed only 5 years, this is a very strong argument against these, otherwise very capable cameras. (A second reason is their 0.85% dark finder, and I tested this in the shop, so I speak of personal experience).

Canon has not said next month. They said that they were working on one which would be released "some time in the future". That could be many months from now -- we just don't know. No one wiill know when until it actually happens, but I personally do not believe it will be next month.

Also, one cannot predict whether the price at that time will go up or down. I have seen them do both. It will depend on current stock and how well they perceive the new 70D to stand in relation to the 60D...ie., customer acceptance. Best to buy when you find a good deal and use the camera while you are still young . :)

All Canon's current on-the-shelf models are old. The 70D should be available by the end of March...if U can wait. I could afford the 7DII, but Oct. is a long time from now, and I don't need 10 fps.

So, get the 70D...best for your money...unless you can't wait a few more weeks.

Everything the T4i has +everything the 7D has+20+MP sensor that is made on Canon's new 180nm process so the high ISO noise will be at least as low as the 5D MKIII+live view af as fast as all u43rds cameras.

What That Means is:

Dramatically improved af in live view (i.e. dramatically improved hybrid PDCD on image sensor)

Touch Screen LCD

3.2" articulating LCD

19 cross points phase detection sensor

6 fps jpegs and raws till card full

20+MP image sensor with ISO noise capability at least equal to the 5D MKIII

Image sensor made on Canon new 180nm process

Same size as 60D

Cost: $1200

What this does is leaves at least the following for the 7D MKII:

Everything the 70D has with the addition of the following;

1DX Phase Detect Sensor Array

2 SD card slots

10 fps raws and jpegs until card full

Complete weather sealing

...still plugging away. Both have probably easily reached their 100k actuation points, and one is basically "the company camera". Unless you're there too - I wouldn't worry. If you're worried - maybe you should consider a different brand?

I gave up waiting for the 70D and got the 60D when the bodies were going for $699 @ B&H and Amazon and am very happy with it. I thought about waiting as well, but figured that the price for the 70D body only is going to be $999 at least and the 60D at $300 less is still a great camera. Also if they announce end of March, it could be a couple of months till they are available (especially as body only). Only Canon knows what features the 70D is going to have, so it is hard to comment on a future body and if those features are worth it over the 60D. One other plus for the 60D is that even after the 70D is announced, the 60Da is still going to be offered, so the accessories will still be available for this camera for a long time.

I am not really worried - the OP stated that his EOS 1000D might leave him soon, and that I found remarkable, given that it cannot be older than 8 years.

I wonder how much thes maximal shutter counts are relevant in real life - or whether they are just guidelines, erring largely on the safe side.

This will also be an important question should I upgrade to the EOS 70D - I would then consider to modify my EOS 20D for infrared photography, and wonder whether the shutter count left would make this transfomation worthwile.

60D's initial price was $1099, which was $100 less than better spec'ed D7000. Nikon prices D7100 the same as D7000. I predict 70D coming at $1099, knowing Canon.

I was noting what would cause me to purchase one.
