With 47st Photo placing the DP1M and DP2M on ebay for $799 opposed to the regular price of $999 and now Adorama following suite on their own website, why do you think there is a discount?

I can think of a number of reasons, but do we know if it is Sigma or the Retailers providing the discount?

If Sigma:

Could Sigma have new versions of the DPMs possible coming soon? Like a slight update for better battery life (could be new battery type) and/or a TRUE III processor that is more efficient.

Could be to stir bigger demand and interest in the DPM series with the DP3M coming out here soon and completing the DPM series.

Do you think the discounts are temporary or permanent? What do you think the reason is behind the discount? Or am I reading too much into this?

FYI, Adorama Links:

SD1M was also discounted from 47st Photo on ebay so I also included the link to the one on Adorama's website.

Well, they may have a surplus of DPM or their looking for a price point at which it will sell/compete. Just a guess.

If I were in business and had a surplus of a produce that isn't selling well I would drop the price in order to move the product and free up shelf space for other items.

Usually when prices drop it means a product isn't selling well at a given price.

Just guesses.

It could be a LOT of things not just the two you mentioned

and by the way if there was an update , a change of battery would NOT be a good thing because of all current dpm users would have to get yet another battery and charger

the battery is really not that big a deal because a better battery will mean bigger battery and bigger charger

what would be most needed is a version with an optional EVF

there are not selling. unless something new was coming out but has anybody heard any rumors of a new sigma camera(maybe Full Frame 72MP) coming out anytime soon..i don't think so.

I bought a DP2M direct from Sigma USA in early October, serial number ending 5635. Perhaps someone who has purchased recently, preferably from Sigma USA, will give us a comparison SN so we can see how fast they are selling?

But not the above... change in yen exchange rate in combination with production effectiveness is much more plausible. Don't throw out rumors/made-up-stuff as facts.

Perhaps not. This has been tried for as long as Sigma have sold cameras, and nothing ever comes of it. Too many variables.

The currency exchange situation is the major part of the reason.

Price on Sigma's US Website is now also $799. Guess it's official. I pulled the trigger this afternoon when B&H dropped their price as well.

Looking forward to joining the cult.

$1k for such limited camera was too much. Not interested in DP1 but DP3 sounds nice. I will wait for the right price on that one too
If there is one consistent complaint on this forum and almost every other at dpreview, it is that the price is too high. When it goes lower, it is still too high. Free is just about right.

No wonder the entire industry is close to tanking.

I dont think you make the poster justice here.

$1K is quite a high priced compact camera.

Now, The DPM cameras are special cameras and the $1K price might be motivated. But, it is quite natural to question such a price.

If it had been $500 or even $400, I dont think many would have objected to the price.

Its like the $2K for the SD1. Its a bit hefty for such a camera. I dont think its unreasonable, considering what it contains. But ... I would not be surprised if the price was questioned.

I also agree that the price is reasonable.

But ... you have to take everything into perspective.

The price for compact cameras is moving down fast today. Its not common to see $1K for a compact camera.

The DPs are not common compacts or P&S.

Sony RX1, Fujifilm X100S? I'm convinced that more will come.
Maybe, but those are exceptions. And the RX1 is very expensive. I assume most will question that price. Even though there might be customers.

Get real! RX1 and X100s are exceptions and DP1M, DP2M and DP3M are not?
