My first serious attempt with a studio setup. Luckily I had a very patient model :). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The crop was intentional. I wanted to show she was coming at the camera. Some light PP with elements.

Looks great to me! but I'm not an expert. I love the girl's attitude - it screams "take that shot already". I would prefer a crop that doesn't cut the fist in half.

Be well and thanks for the post!

Lol that's exactly what she was saying.

Really like the lighting, looks like you have nice setup are you plaining to do more portraits? I understand the crop cool! but IMO her face just seems a fraction soft or is it me?

P.S. just a small thing but maybe you could iron the cloth in the back so you don't see the fold marks LoL ;-)

Yes I want to try to do more portraits if time will allow. Yes the face was made a tad soft intentionally as well before any pp was done. Lol I was starting to steam the backdrop and my daughter started getting mad because it was taking too long. Thanks.

The exif is attached for camera settings. The lens I used was the 16-50/2.8 at 40mm. The lighting setup was key light 45 camera left and the second light was at camera right just behind her and angled to give some hair light as well as light the background. Key light was set at 1/16 and second light around 1/8.

The lighting is interesting. I wish there was a little bit less of a gradient between the sides of the girl's face and the middle of her face, and wish the crop didn't cut off half her hand/shoulder. That part is probably the most distracting. There's also a little bit more texture in the background than I'd go for in a shot, but either way it's an interestingly lit shot with a fun expression, so I like it regardless. :)

Thanks. I was trying for a high backlit shot using split lighting. The wrinkles in the background I couldn't steam fast enough for her. That's why I was saying luckily I have a very patient model. :)

I noticed the background too -- but you mentioned purposely lighting the background with the second light (?).. so maybe that was your intent. I like my black backgrounds invisibly black, so I'd avoid illumination on them; using a snoot or other means to block peripheral light from the "hair light" will help with that (along with getting it high, pointing down on the top of the head). A third light can help with that, with the 3rd one dedicated as the hair light, giving you more control with the placement & intensity of secondary. Also, not sure if you went with raw or jpg, but I always shoot these raw (DRO can really pull out the textures in the black that you may not want) to get the best control with controlling shadow/highlight and black level to really get a handle on things.

That said, looks like a really fun shot with lots of "feeling" coming through in her expression! :) I like it!

Thanks for the feedback. I saw a picture a while ago that lit up the black background and I wanted to try to imitate the shot. I shoot RAW exclusively. My next attempt is going to be mixing hot lights and strobes. Hopefully that works out. :)

Great skin tones, i like the lighting. Maybe crop the top down about halfway on her hair?

Other than that....?Looks great.

"Put up the dukes"..adorable-nice job,brian

Thanks Brian. I left the crop like that to show her hair flying from the fan placed in front of her.

Thanks for that bit of info I was unaware of that. How would I be able to do that in elements.

Thanks.

Thank you for your feedback. I know it's not a perfect shot but I think it's a very good capture of the moment.
