Hi all,

I have just aquired a 1D mkii as they are now cheap as chips on ebay, there are a lot of possible settings to adjust so I was just wondering what the general concensus is regarding the following:

Jpeg quality setting 1-10 currently it's on 10

Colour settings

Sharpness settings - currently on 0 I think.

white balance setting - I think it is on 5200 or possibly 5000.

Any help greatly appreciated thanks.

On a side note, after very limited testing with a 100-400L It would appear that the image quality is actually better than my 550d, also with it's 1.3x crop there is a surprising amount more to be seen of my EF 20-35mm!

From what I've read the out-of-camera jpegs are not great particularly with regards to sharpness.I only shoot RAW with mine so can't offer much advise for jpeg shooting/settings.

The 1D MkII and 1Ds MkII apparently have fairly strong anti-aliasing filters compared to the original 1D thus requiring more aggressive sharpening during post-processing (again from what I've read).

Here are some links I found helpful -

note: I seem to remember there were a couple of mistakes in one of the articles but don't recall specifically what they were

Quickly glanced through this again, I probably didn't/don't do half of what they suggest, but at the time it made me think about the possible choices for settings.

If you want to use jpegs straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) then may want to set a custom tone curve

Wow, thankyou very much for taking the time to post this info - much appreciated!!!

I set jpeg's to 8. This is the sweet spot. A higer setting just makes the file larger. A lower setting degrades the image without much reduction in file size!

I maxed out the sharpness to 5 and it still needs more, the mk3 I have now I set to 7. (Max is 10)

In the later DPP you can set it to 10 max if I remember correctly.

Have you checked that you have to latest firmware on the camera - version 1.2.6?

v1.2.6 allows the use of higher capacity memory cards in the camera. I normally use 16GB cards in my 1D MkII, but sometime back I checked if it would recognize 32GB CF & SDHC cards that I normally use in another camera and it did.

If you don't have v1.2.6 then looks like can still get it from the Canon (even though Canon apparently no longer repairs this model):

Here's one location

And the Canon USA page - select an older operating system and then click on Firmware

Hi Roonal, thanks for asking - yes I am on 1.2.6, which is handy as I have just ordered a 16 Gig CF card!

Cheers,

Ultra
