I would appreciate any reasonable suggestions or advice with the following:

B&H have a current K30 bundle (18-50mm lens) for $619.00 and the Sigma 18-250 discounted to $399.00. This would be $1018.00 (free shipping) total. It appears to be a very good "deal".

The big "however" for me is less the affordability than the justification of jumping to the $1000.00 + range for a camera that I would not be using rigorously year round.

Over the years I have moved from a Nikon 6006 to an 8008 and then to a Sony H2 (my favorite digital too date!) and then to a Fuji HS10 which I have been less than pleased with.

My "needs" are getting back to something with a large, bright, optical viewfinder (or its evf equivalent), the ability to take high speed, non-flash, low noise photos (specifically inside museums, cathedrals, churches, etc. when travelling), shooting fast action airshow shots, reasonable telephoto distance, and decent macro capability for floral shots. Would prefer the use of a decent, (not perfect in all respects) reasonably priced zoom lens that is not overtly soft at the ends and is acceptably fast.

The K30/Sigma combo appears to fill that bill.I would love to find a good superzoom for under $750.00 that fills all the above "criteria" but it simply does not exist. Had great hopes for the Fuji XS-1 but it didn't make the grade.

If I finally make the leap to a dSLR is this about as reasonable a deal as I can expect for a safe purchase of non-gray equipment or are there other alternatives that I have somehow overlooked?

Though I would prefer a dedicated "movie" button and a (at least) tiltable lcd, I could live without both.

Thanks in advance for any assist with my current dilemma!

You can get the Sony A57 w/ 18-55mm and 75-300mm for $750, or for $800 get the 55-300mm instead. That's the best I can think of within your price range.

Thanks and I will "re-review the A57. My primary aim is to keep the expenditure as much under $1000. as is reasonably possible considering my criteria so that gives me some "wiggle" room.

Yeah, I hear you :)

I'm shopping for a DSLR w/ 18-135mm lens and basically no matter which camera I choose it's almost exactly $1000. Now I can get a bundle with 18-55mm for low/mid 600's for different cameras, but I feel that this doesn't really cover all your day to day needs and having to carry two lenses and swap them doesn't sound ideal to me. More lenses for special purposes, sure. If I'm going to the zoo I know to bring my big telephoto. If I'm going to the Grand Canyon bring the wide angle. Botanical Gardens bring the macro. But not to carry every day.

I'd love to shave something off that price, because I'm also going to need a few accessories like an extra battery, carrying sling, maybe some image software, etc...

By the time I added in both a UV and circular polarizer filter, the Pentax AA battery adapter, and a wireless remote, it brought the price for the camera and Sigma lens to almost 1200. Could probably get that down to 1050-1100 by going with third party for the battery adapter and remote along with a midrange filter triple pack. That is still 200-300 more than I would "prefer" to spend. Only issue I can see with the A65 is low light/noise complaints once you go to 1600 or above ISO which would not be a frequent occurrence. However, could I use 1600 (handheld with stabilizer on) inside a dim to moderately lit church in Tuscany and get reasonably noise free results ?

You could get the k01 with the kit lens for $360. add to that a 17-70 and or 18-135WR

or 28-75, f2.8

sell the kit lens or $150 if you don't want it.

Also, with new models coming out in April?? I think?

expect to see current models discounted if you can wait a few weeks.

No real rush as I won't be going away until August so I have a decent timeframe available. The $619.00 BH price is what caught my attention and got the ball rolling.

Now there's a thought... Would we expect the K-30 to be discounted too? I was thinking that if the only new model was the K-5iii then it would just be the higher models that saw a drop. And even there, they just got a $100 drop three weeks ago.

Anyway, if there is more than one new model coming I haven't heard any whispers of it yet.
