...but...

How can I tell if a non-Canon lens is compatible with my Canon 5D mkIII?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the manufacturer

Sigmas lenses for crop cameras are DC so if a lens is not designated DC it should be OK.

I don't know about other manufacturers acronyms though.

Haven't you heard of Google?

Anyway, Canon EF-S, Sigma DC, Tokina AT-X pro DX and Tamron DiII will NOT fit your camera.

The third party lens makers make the same model lens available in different camera mounts. At the risk of being obvious, shop for those made for the Canon autofocus, EOS or EF mount.

Zeiss: Though made to fit autofocus cameras, these are manual focus only lenses. Their EOS mount lenses are ZE. Avoid ZF (Nikon F-mount), ZA (Minolta/Sony A-mount), and ZM (Zeiss Ikon and Leica M-mount).

Sigma: "DG" is the full frame line. Avoid the "DC" line, which are intended for the smaller sensor models. They will safely mount and can be used on a 5D mk III, but project a smaller image circle and vignette badly. An additional caveat with Sigma is, if shopping used, avoid lenses made 2002 and prior (they won't have "DG" in the name). The backward-engineering of the Canon lens communication was flawed and they won't work properly on EOS bodies introduced in 2002 and later.

Tamron: "Di" lenses are for the full frame cameras like 5D. Avoid the crop camera line "Di II", though like Sigma DG they can be mounted and used safely, just won't fill the frame.

Tokina: "FX" are full frame. Avoid the crop body "DX" line, though like Sigma DG they can be mounted and used safely - just won't fill the frame.

Can you help narrow the subject down?

I have recently bought a Canon 5 D mk III to replace my 450D. I also purchased a Canon 17-40 L lens with the body. I have some old lenses from the 4050D but am in the market for another couple of lenses to complete my kit. A good walkabout lens to keep on the camera at all times, and a telephoto for the Cricket and other sports etc.

I'm not rich, I got the camera on the back of a payout from a motorcycle crash, so I’m looking at third party lenses as well as the Canon range. I did try googling, as suggested above, but there were no clear cut answers. A question to the good folk here has put me on the right track, and saved me a mint.

I must admit I know nothing about any of the 3rd party makers producing Canon mount lenses except Zeiss. One option is to buy the CZ 21mm, set focus to infinity (will produce pretty sharp front to back images without further focusing with the appropriate aperture), do your walkabout, then crop to taste back at the hacienda.

If you had been talking about adapting discontinued Contax, Leica & Olympus MF lenses or any of the Nikon F mount lenses to your EOS system, the topic is dense and I didn't want to go there if it was not needed.
