Hey,

I new at digital fotography and would like to bye a camera which will last me a few years.

After reading a lot of information I came to the consusion that the Nikon 5700 was the one for me.

But the price is the only problem. Here in Belgium that one cost + - 1500 Dollar. I'm willing to pay that price but then i want to be sure that there aren't any camera's that are almost as good but much cheaper.
So, can you suggest me a cheaper but almost as good camera??

Canon G3 ?
Sony 717 ?

Thanks.

Do you mean that Nikon 5700 is so poor a 5.0 megapixel camera that even 3.1 megapixel Fuji 602 will be able to come to its level.

Yes, I know that megapixels aren't all in all, but Nikon 5700 seems to be a good camera in other aspects too.

When compared to the Olympus C5050z I cannot understand why the Nikon 5700 costs $400-500 more (canadian). The biggest difference is the 8x optical zoom on the Nikon but is that worth the extra money, I think not.

There are those on the Fuji forum who have returned 5700s and got 602s - the price difference may have decreased but bang for buck the Fuji is the wiser choice and has some features not present on 5700, and the image difference is much less than the mega pix figures would suggest. I'm not saying 5700 is poor though !

It's about $150 more (after MIR) in the US, give or take a few dollars.

There are other differences, one big one being macro capabilities. The 5700 will focus down to 3mm, the 5050 20mm), different sensor sizes (may not make a noticeable difference), ect.

But is it worth it? Can't say.

Take a trip to New York and save 600USD on the camera and another 300 on the accessories. That will pay you the ticket to New York. That will also give you the possibility to avoid Belgium a couple of days. All three camera is top prosumer cameras. If You dont need 8 times zoom, The G3 is a possibilty.

okjaergaard minolta 7i, nikon cp 4300,

Yes. The 5700 is several hundred dollars overpriced. Granted, it is still one of the best prosumer digital cameras on the market, but for the same price you could have a new DSLR body. Yes, you'd still have to buy a lens if you don't already have one or more, but current DSLRs are far superior to the 5700 in terms of image noise, processing speed and -- most importantly -- focus.

The 5700 shouldn't cost more than $800 ... and most stores should be selling it for $700. Unfortunately, Nikon will keep the price high for as long as possible ... even after MANY more people buy DSLRs.

If the 5700 was only $700, I "might" think about buying it ... but since several DSLRs can be found for between $1,100 and $1,400 on sale, why would I want to spend $1,000 to $1,200 on the 5700?

Take a look at the Olympus C750 when it comes out soon - 4MP, 10X optical zoom and about £400 cheaper than the Nikon.

the extra zoom, which is 1.6X the max zoom of the 5050z (105?), must call for a more expensive lens system?

I chose the Minolta 7i because it takes standard photographic filters without any adapters, has a manual zoom control cause I personally hate electric zooms, has a great 28mm wide and 200 tele, has a very nice evf with lowlight magnification, can do wireless flash with a minolta flash, and all the controls are in a very nice position so i can run it without looking at the buttons.

amongst other reasons...

Thanks everybody for the reply's. I already took a look at the Olympus C750. One problem though here is the "Max shutter: 1/1000 sec".

As for the trip to New York, :-), would be nice indeed. Too bad I don't have the time.

I think the S602 could be a good alternative for me. But I'm still not sure which camera i should buy.
I like the canon G3 but then there I only have the 4x zoom.

Aaaahhhh.....Don't know what to do.

Ah well, this week I'm gonna make my discission. I'll let you guys know which one I bought.

If there are any more suggestions: show them to me....!!

Thanks.

Hi,

I bought three weeks ago a Minolta 7i -- and I am very happy with it...

As someone else already stated, you get 28-200 (28!!), mechanical zoom, and other machanical controls so that you don't ever need to turn on the LCD!
I would buy it only for that reasons..

Have you some particular reasons why not to buy it? I mean, something against Minolta..?

Bye,
Andrea Vicentini

Hey MrMagic,

I don't have anything against Minolta.
In the contrary I'm now thinking of buying the 7i.
Fits my needs and it's within my budget.
Today I'm gonna test it and if I like it, I'm gonna take it.

I'll let you know.

If you want all the capabilities to learn 35mm photography in a digital camera the 7i is the ONLY way to go. I shot 35mm with a totally manual camera back in the 1970's to learn it. Way before automatic anything. The 7i/7Hi feels more like a 35 mm camera to me than any of the competition. Imagine in this day and age actually having to manually zoom the lens. Sometimes the old way is superior to the technologically up to the minute way.

Hey guys,

I found a promotion in Germany for the Nikon 5700. There the difference between the Minolta and Nikon is only about 100 USD.

So what should I do? I know I origanaly wanted to buy the Nikon but now that I took a good look at the Minolta, I not so sure anymore if I wanna buy the Nikon.

If price wasn't an option, which one should I buy?

NIKON 5700 or MINOLTA 7i ????

I'm gonna use it for all kinds of purposes.

My advice...go to the side-by-side comparisons.

Look at the sample photos of each. (some sounded great, yet the color wasn't as good...or took great close-ups, but buildings shots were lacking, ect)
Compare size of camera (if that matters).
Compare price.
Pick the one that fits the most of your needs.

I picked the 602z myself after doing all of those steps, but you may have different requirements.

Did you do a side by side? You might narrow it down that way. There are quite a few differences besides the cost!
Color array: 7i (grgb) 5700 (cygm)
Wide zoom: 7i (28mm) 5700 (35mm)
Tele zoom: 7i (200mm) 5700 (280mm)
Max shutter sp: 7i (1/2000 sec) 5700 (1/4000 sec)
Min shutter sp: 7i (4 sec) 5700 (8 sec)
Macro: 7i (13cm) 5700 (3cm)
Ect, ect, ect...

Hopla, ask yourself several salient questions. Do I want to use a camera that has a true wide angle 28mm lens? Do I want a MANUAL zoom? Do I want one of the sharpest lenses ever found in a Prosumer cam? Do I want

excellent low light focusing capabilities? Don't get me wrong, the Nikon is an great camera; but these are the things that you would give up if you choose the Nikon over the Minolta. Like the previous poster.......go to the camera shop and try each.......I think that will help you make the correct decision for yourself.

For me the 28mm wide with a manual zoom clinched it for the Minolta. But

I must admit I do like the black body of the Nikon (but not enough to get in the way of buying the superior camera). Believe me......I tried both...actually was a contest between the Fuji S602, 5700, 7Hi and the 7i.
The 7i won.

Hey Don,

Thanks for the reply.

I already tested the Nikon a month ago and liked it. Did not test the 7i so that's what I'm gonna do tomorrow. How that will give me enough information to make a discission.
So hard to make a choise when so much money is involved.

Can anyone who used both camera's about their speed of taking a pic?

Is one faster then the other and is it something to consider or are they both ok when speed is considered??

Bye, Hopla
