Preview of RAW files just an icon

Is there something I can do so I'm able to see a preview of my RAW files from my 5D Mk III instead of just the RAW icon? When I upload my photographs to my computer I like to sort them right away by subject and date and whatnot, but right now the preview only shows the icon so the process of me organizing them becomes much longer as I have to open each one individually. All my previous cameras (5D Mk II, 40D, 20D) showed the image in the preview.

It depends on what you're using to view them. Because they're a new file format, your software will need to be updated to read them.

If you update Canon's Imagebrowser, you will achieve what you are trying to do, you will need the camera and the USB cable.

Download the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack:

It works fine for me on Windows 7 64 bit (40D, I haven't bought my 5D Mk III yet), but others have reported problems:

I had no thumbnails until I ran Disk Cleanup and deleted all the thumbnails and rebooted, as advised by others on that page.

The only alternative, as far as I am concerned, is to buy the (very good) FastPictureViewer Codec Pack by Axel Rietschin.

As per Keithgg, the codec will do what you want if you are viewing in file explorer
