I just upgraded from a D50 to a D7000 and have 2 questions related to buffer size when shooting in CH mode. I thought that if I reduced the image size that this would afford more images in the buffer. I have tried various image sizes and I am still getting an 8 image buffer. I am using a Nikon 18-200 VR lens equipped with a 16GB ProMaster Secure Digital card (notation on the card indicates SD HC Performance). I asked for a fast card and this is what I was sold which could be my problem. I never had a 7 fps camera before so I have been playing around and came up with these 2 questions.

If someone can straighten me out I would sure appreciate it.

Regards...............Ralph

When you say 8 images in the buffer do you mean the r value in the top LCD only shows 8 or that you only get 8 shots before the camera slows? Check to make sure your shooting menu has Auto Distortion Control set to off (page 205 in the manual) as this can really slow the buffer emptying speed.

SD HC should be plenty fast enough if it's class 6 or faster. Does it have the little "10" in a circle?

RAW or JPG?

My D7000 slows dramatically after 7 or 8 exposures when recording RAW. That's the main reason I shoot JPG for youth soccer. Not noticed too many delays if I set JPG/BASIC (for instance). Having said that, I do normally have d7 set to 5.

Thank you John for your suggestion. I had left d7 to it's default of 100 as I didn't think it would matter but I will research to see if this too makes a difference. I used to shoot raw with my D50 but now with the D7000 and it's 16.2 megapixel capability I will definitely shoot action photos of my Grandkids in jpeg. Mako identified my problem as being with the Auto Distortion Control feature being turned on, turning that off solved my problem (see Mako's post).

Best Regards...........Ralph

Glad you got sorted. I checked my Distortion Control and it was already off. My d7 = 5 comment was really to explain why I seldom fill the buffer rather than a possible fix.

I've now read "Nikon D7000 Autofocus System explained" and will read it again - probably not now the red wine bottle has been drained.
