I had an EPL-1 first and I loved its picture quality.

Then I got the EPL-3 and it had some improvements over the EPL-1 but not in the picture quality. The shadows always looked bad even after lifting them a bit.

I was never really happy with it. There were too many quirks and annoyances. So after 6 month it had to go.

The EPL-5 on the other hand feels like a real upgrade. I did some testing and the picture quality is outstanding. So many of the things I did not like on the EPL-3 are changed to the better now.

I am in Germany right now but in a few weeks I will be on my way to Ghana were I will travel the country extensively for the next 2-3 years.

The EPL-5 will be my ideal travel companion.

I found something about the e-pL3 & e-pM1 : if you adjust the shadows tone curve it makes MUCH cleaner and blacker shadows.

For some reason Olympus ship them out with a too-shallow shadow curve and it was wrecking the overall tone of my pictures by boosting shadows into noisy greys, and that's with gradation normal.

I found the fix when trying to get something like Panasonic's dynamic B&W on my e-pM1.

Tone curve.

No matter, you have the new sensor now...

You’re right about those shadows with the E-PL3, Linus. They are particularly annoying when photographing dark-skinned people as I do in Papua New Guinea and you will be doing in Ghana (in fact. darker skinned than most of my subjects). OI have found that the shadows basically go to colorless! Just muddy gray>black! No color at all so lifting them is not an option, often.

I get the impression that this has improved vastly with the E-PL5 (and EM5. I'll be looking to upgrade soon, although I must say the Panny G5 is also looking very attractive, and hey, what will Olympus do with the E-Px? :)

Cheers, geoff

Henry, have you tried the 1/3 over-exposed to the right trick. I shoot people @1/3 over-exposed then curve down. This produced cleaner (less noisy) image then curve up a standard exposure to brighten people's face.

I had a very noisy Panasonic GF2, and that trick makes it somewhat tolerable. I'm looking at Olympus E-PM2 and E-PL5 with great interest. Unfortunately, I'm not fond of Olympus layout, I'm more of a Panasonic guy.

+1, I upgraded last Nov. on my birthday. Love the EPL-5!

Find a significant difference between my EPL-2 and the EPL-5 which is why I am now selling the EPL-2.

Thanks for the thought, Peter, I'll give it a go. I enjoy the E-PL3 immensely (except for the stupid little accessory flash), love its small size, and am a big fan of Oly JPEG color. OI was looking forward to moving up to the E-PL5 with the improved sensor but then read a review of the G5 did my arithmetic on its size, and thought: "Hey, once you add a lens to the measurements, this is actually as small or smaller and as light or lighter as the E-PL3/5 with the VF2 in place!"

I've been scraping around for a direct comparison of the G5 color (I cut my m43 teeth on a G1 -- fabulous ergonomics and lenses but not great color) and the Oly color. haven’t been able to find one so far,. but a lot of references to much improved Panny color.

We'll see.

Cheers, geoff

Congrats. Have fun with your new camera. Hope lenses are set too for your trip to Ghana. Happy shooting :)

Welcome to the growing club, Linus.

Tell me: how long did it take you to get the SCP active?

It drove me nuts, coming from an E-330 and E-5, which have that feature turned on at the factory. I've got it all set now, though.

A real firecracker of a camera — and great for travelling, I agree.
