This is the Clipper Friendship, a replica of a 1797 East India Tall Ship. I photographed it in color on a sunny day at its dock in Salem, Mass, and then Photoshopped it to make it appear as if it was coming out of the fog.

without a doubt, even da Vinci, Gogh would sit up and take notice.

Awesome Uncle frank, just awesome I can almost feel the mist from the fog. Would'nt mind having a copy of that framed and on my wall. Would you mind if I print it out ? If it prints well would like to have enlarged and as I said framed, only with your permission.
Thank you
Ralph

This is the kind of picture that make me think that I should give up photography. I know that I could not match it in any way. It is a beautiful work of art. Thanks for sharing it.

matte treatment in this. Very understated, just right. I also like the way it is cropped to suit the image, not to hard and fast rules of dimension. Sometimes I think we stick to 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 too much in digital photography when we don't have to.

That's very flattering, Tom, but don't give up taking pictures. This composition is more about Photoshop than it is about camera work.

Would also love to see the original. Thanks
Sure, Louise. Here's the original, untouched except for downsizing:

I converted it to grayscale using the "lightness channel" method described in Scott Kelby's book, "The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers", and then did the vignetting and sharpening with standard techniques.

I agree. It's nice to let the picture set the dimensions and not be trapped by frame sizes. I cropped it by eye to match the ship's mast, but the funny thing is, I just checked and it came out almost exactly to 4X6 aspect ratio. Go figure [lol].
