Tasmania with new OMD

First time posting although I have been long time reader of Olympus forum since I got my E510 a few years ago (long long before this I had a OM 10 and then an OM 2). Recently bought an OMD EM5 for portability and low light performance. I enjoy the E510 and have taken many great images (IMO) although mainly in good light, shooting in manual mode to get exposure right.

Have just retuned from family holiday in Tasmania and my wife and girls all enjoyed using the OMD. First impressions really nice to shoot with, love small size, iAuto setting works well in most cases, great indoor/low light performance (took some great photos at MONA Gallery), still trying to work out menus and using it in a way that approaches its capabilities Very much the amateur and only have 14-42 kit lense which is OK although from reading this forum I can see benefits of getting a prime lense.

An example of some photos, all JPG straight from camera one or two with minor cropping. One could not help but get some great photos with spectacular morning light on the Gordon River. In some shots I was not quite able to pick up definition and detail in shadowed forest areas while maintaining the (true) intense colour of sky but overall very happy.

In some of the photos posted, colors are so brilliant that you seem to have used a polarizer filter.

Anyway, very nice pics.

I want to go to Tasmania...

Good landscapes, favorites are first and third pictures.

Thanks for the comments. Actually no polarising filter used. If anything, colours are not as intense as seen by naked eye (with possible exception of colours in water reflection). Tasmania is well worth the trip.

It looks a great place for pictures.

Beautiful photos! Really love the third shot - hope you get that one printed (if you haven't tried canvas, that one would make a good candidate). Looks like a pretty amazing place to visit!

... of pictures I /did not/ get over Xms-NY 15 years ago because it rained all the time and was bitterly cold! LOL

Beautiful work.

PS: Let’s not fall into the fashion of this forum of under-rating the standard zooms. When I first came on, people were slagging the Panny 14-45, basically because it was supplied as standard. I found it an excellent lens and many others have acknowledged its quality now too.

I've also found the 14-42 II on my E-PL3 to be an excellent lens too. As it happens, that zoom range doesn’t suit my photography so I don’t use it much but in my view, the results show it is no poor relative.

Cheers, geoff

Please come, we need the tourists. To the OP nice collection, did you take any "street" shots as well (you mentioned the MOMA museum, how did it handle the low lighting?)

O beautiful Tasmania. I was there in September this year and pretty much fell in love with the landscape. Sad to hear they're having bushfires now.

Thanks for your comments. I just used iAuto setting in Mona (a fabulous place). Some examples below. I would have liked to play with different light source options but I haven't worked out how to do this yet! OMD did a pretty good job on its own. (No flash allowed and really didn't need it even for darkest exhibits). I took some OK building shots in Launceston and some shot in a town called Sheffield (examples below). While I really like candid people shots I am a bit hesitant on being too intrusive (OMD however will be less conspicuous).

Thanks for your comments and really nice shots. I recognise the view towards Frenchmans Peak (the Gordon River is just on the other side, I believe, of the furthest extend of the shot) and like the perspective and colours of the Cradle mountain photo.

Great shots Kim. Nice to see you went to MONA. I was involved with the construction of it. Definitely the highlight project of my 20 year career to date.

Did you take any external shots of MONA? Hoping to get back down there in the next few months & will definitely be taking my om-d with me.

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I did not get any of the outside of what is a brilliant building with fascinating diverse displays. As a geologist I loved the use of the natural sandstone in some of the exhibits. Photo below actually taken by my daughter. Some other Mona photos posted in another of my replies.

Thanks Geoff, Perhaps it's time for a return trip. Kind of agree with comments on lenses as I only have kit lenses on my E510 and they do OK. Still it would be fun to compare with a high end lens...

Looks pretty! What lurks, though, in the underbrush?

Are any visitors enticed to pass a night in the wilds in order to hear the violent nocturnal mating yowls of a famous local marsupial? Perhaps some groups give a warranty: "We guarantee that you will be awaken from your sleep with noise, at least a buzzing in your ears. Our guides are also epiic Antipodal snorers and snorters, enough to scare even "Taz." Bring your own bug repellent and distillations."

I disagree, both local beers are actually nice, especially Boaghs.

I took loads more pics there, you can see them by following the link of my pics above (picture source) and check out the album on flickr. Was at Mona too, but actually respected the ban on publication of pictures taken;D
