Now that DXOMark has a rating on the RX1. Maybe we will have one from DPreview soon.

Anyone venture to estimate what the number maybe? I am thinking 79 and a silver.

Since it doesn't have SteadyShot it should get a Silver. If it gets a Gold, my RX100 may sue.

Easily 82% Gold... with D600 at 87% and A99 at 84%, both gold.

In it's class it is Gold (and silver and bronze) as it is the only one that exists.

+1.

I'd be surprised if they didn't give it Gold w/ >80% for exactly these reasons.

What will be interesting is how the EVF accessory plays a roll in there findings and discussion. As a related aside, I really enjoyed Tim Ashley's analysis and summary. I'm betting dpreview's summary will be similar to his.

Im glad they left out optical IS. First of all how many 35mm lenses/full frame cameras have built in IS? Secondly imagine what this would do to size and battery life. Third with such a fast lens and high ISO sensor you can work around it. Also it would add tot he cost and we don't need that.

Now if they develop a rx2 with zoom it may be needed more.

I wonder how many buyers actually wait for a DPReview on something like this. If this has been something you've been waiting for you might have one already.

Rating a camera within its class is both a necessary and very messy proposition. That would mean you cannot rate the only member of its class at all, or you are forced to construct an artificial class that might not be the most meaningful.

Will it be rated in the FF class? The Fixed lens 35mm class? The overall fixed lens class? How about the under 500 gram class?

Everytime I get ready to pull the trigger on the RX1 I read another negative thread here.

the review will start off with something along the lines of "the rx1 is unique because it is the first fixed lens full frame digital camera that also can be considered a point and shoot, though both its admirers and detractors will not linger long on the last point...":-)

Are they even going to review it?

I don't really understand how a big site like this can be so slow in getting around to reviewing new cameras ...

DPreview.com is huge! Their web ranking is #1069, meaning it's a true internet business. As such, they must have a ton of projects going on concurrently. The RX1 is not a mass market product. If they do review it, it is great for us. For one, they can share valuable insights in the operations as well as what is inside. They may even suggest to Sony firmware upgrade items.

I have the camera now for a month but i still feel I am using maybe 25% of its features properly.

I would encourage you to let your decision hinge on simple questions:
  1. Do I want one of the best 35mm lenses to be had for any money?
  2. Can I live with it married to a camera?
  3. Is so so CDAF autofocus plus pretty good manual focusing aids good enough?
  4. Do I really want full frame? Do I really need full frame in a compact size?
  5. Am I prepared not to attempt to make this camera into something that it isn't just because it's small, or full frame, or very attractive/well made?
  6. Do I accept the fact that every year technology improves and thiis 3k camera might be available for half price in 18 months?
I would caution you to not to buy an RX1 unless the answer to all the questions is realistically in the affirmative. And if they are in the affirmative, check out the X100s in person if you can afford to wait. Otherwise run and get an RX1, but don't get it without a four year drop protection plan, a nice B+W clear nano coated filter, and an EVF.

This will be a tough call for DPR since the RX1 sits in a catagory of one, the RX1. In any case it will be interesting to see the final call and how they couch their conclusions. In my view it's a stunning performer so I'd say 84 and gold. We'll see.

Silver.

minus points for:

slow tracking AF compared to less expensive entry level DSLRs.

expensive. Did I say expensive?

still, the RX1 is the only game in town for those shooters wanting a small FF P&S.

When I said "here" I was referring to this forum not this thread. I have wanted this camera and have it sitting in my Amazon basket as we speak but then someone will talk about focusing problems, or a defect in the lens, etc. I am reading every RX1 thread and there is good and bad.
