So far I used a Nikon D70, afterwards/still the D300. Just before New Years Eve I got the chance to try the Nikon D5200. Missing the wheels for aperture and shutter speed from the Nikon D300 a lot but otherwise I'm very impressed.

Just a couple examples playing with light and manual settings including white balance using the Nikon 35mm 1.8. Since Aperture can not handle Nikon's RAW 5200 yet all images where jpg only.

Thanks ver much for sharing, I am not surprised the low iso shots look very good. Iso 800 is still quite low by my standards, I use the d5100 and it does unbelievable impressiv night and low light shots. Iso 6400 is generally very usable and even hi 2 is grainy but still looks good.

I wonder how the d5200 does upward of iso 1000? Again thanks very much for sharing.

Looks good. I wonder how it compares to D5100. Does it inherit the stellar low-light performance of D5100 or is the sensor the same we saw in D3200?

I took this one of my Xmas tree in the dark no flash at 5000 ISO hand held.

Hand held and ISO 5000, outstanding.

Rockandmusic, how do you like the viewfinder and the focus zone icons on the D5200? The D5100 never appealed to me because of its nearly invisible little dots instead of well-defined boxes like my D90 (and your D200). Does the D5200 use a box representation like those higher end bodies?

Thanks.

I agree about the small and DIM focus spots in the viewfinder of my D5100, my D200 was better,, no fix for that I imagine

rock and music, did you have any experience with the D5100 and if so, how would you compare them. I just received a D5100 for Christmas and have till the end of January to return it if not happy. So far I like the quality of the photos but find the viewfinder a pain. Also I like the fact it is lighter than my D90 because of bad wrists. Love your photos.

Glad you were able to get out today. Our friends in the north of England say the weather has been the worst in memory.

Cheers,

Lynn

I had a bit of a play with a D5200 yesterday and the first thing that I noticed was the better viewfinder and focus boxes flashing all over the place.

It appears to be much improved.

I didn't have any experience with the Nikon 5100 nor the 7000. I'm a very happy D300 user and was afraid that I will be limited with the lower Nikons. However, the D300 is too big and too expensive to take kayaking, especially white water.

I like the view finder of the 5200, felt nothing is missing. I really like the information on the screen, something new to me. A plus especially for beginners is the information/help for many features directly build in.

What I really miss and it seems I'm not getting used to it, is the I have to press the +/- button to change aperture. On the D300 you do that with 2 wheels at the same time. Makes me slow on the D5200 :-(

Next thing to dig into is filming. Something I don't have at all on the D300. Will bei interesting I guess.
