Does any one know if the D800 records distance to subject in Exif using AF-S G lenses?

It does not record focus distance in the EXIF information.

Yes it does, it´s noted under "Manufacturer notes".

Why do you say it doesn´t?
It´s not kind to give false answers to people who ask a legitimate question.

Oh! I had seen that the Exif had an entry for subject distance but in the case of my first 300/400 shots it contained no information. Maybe there is a setting that I need to set to get the D800 to populate the field.

Maybe you need a better EXIF reader to see the info.
I don´t know of any setting that could influence this kind of EXIF entry.

Edit: if you open a RAW file in Photoshop and go to File Info, choose Advanced and click Schema.
Focus distance is expressed in x/100, i.e. centimeters.

Found it! In the software I was using the field is called "Subject Distance" and is not populated. However, if I use ExifGUI then the field, or maybe its a different field, is called "Focus Distance" which seems to be what I need.
