Hey forum,

I have been using my canon 60d for a year now and I am at a standstill. I have been using an old 18-55mm kit lens I got with my rebel 350d and some old olympus lenses. I really want to upgrade to better lenses. The perfect kit seems like a Canon 10-22 and a Canon 24-105 (or Canon 24-70). I am worried that if I upgrade to a 5d or 6d that the 10-22 will be worthless. I also am wondering if the f/2.8 versus the f/4 is worth it. Any ideas?

There is always a market for a good lens which the 10-22 is. Depending on your interests get the appropriate lens that you'll use soon even if it is an EF-S lens and worry about going to full frame later. There are plenty of reliable buy/sell forums online like Fred...

There are plenty of reliable buy/sell forums online like Fred Miranda or POTN. I can provide a couple of links if you're interested. You'll save hundreds buying used, mint gear from reliable, avid enthusiasts.

Regarding a f/2.8 vs f/4 also depends if your interests lie in handheld low light or if you require depth of field with creamy bokeh. No sense buying a more expensive and heavier f/2.8 lens if you shoot mostly around f/5.6. The 24-105 is a very good, popular walkaround, general purpose lens. It has a more useful range with IS that the 24-70 lens doesn't.

Most sports/action and wildlife shooters prefer an APS-C sensored body whereas portrait/wedding and landscape photogs prefer a FF body but that doesn't mean your 60D can't be used for all interests, just that a FF has better resolution for large prints and generally higher ISO for low light situations.

Things to consider:

What you shoot, picture quality, price, weight, focal length, speed, stabilization, video capability, etc, etc, etc.

Only you can carefully consider all these factors and decide which lenses are best for you.

that old kit lens would be weak glass. makes no sense to have a very good 60d and that glass.

what do you like to shoot? how much do you have to spend in short run?

Have a look at the Canon 15-85 as well.

I agree that the lens is terrible glass. I mostly shoot on the canon 50 f/1.4, but I do perfer zooms.

Thanks this was really helpful. I believe I will go for the 24-105 as it will provide the best value for me and I also have the canon 50 f/1.4 for low light.

the 24-105 is a full frame lens and isn't so hot on the 60d

get the 15-85 IS which is the winner on 60d combined with your 50 f1.4

between 15-23, it is f3.5 and amazing sharpness and only 1/2 stop slower than 17-55 and sharper than both the 24-105 and the 17-55

go to The Digital Picture Site and read the review and use the iso tool to compare sharpness

Before you finalize that decision, suggest you use your current lens to get a good feeling for the difference in coverage between 18mm and 24mm and look at your collection of images to see which FL's you're spending most of your time at. If you tend to shoot fairly wide, you'll find 24mm to be too long at the wide end, and even paired with the 10-22, you might be swapping lenses more than you'd like. Conversely, if you tend to shoot long, then 24mm might be just fine as your widest FL. It all depends on your choice of subject matter and shooting style. In my case, that lens would be a non starter except on a FF camera since I shoot a lot between 17mm and 24mm.

In general, I'd regard the 15-85 as a better choice, if you don't mind giving up a bit on the long end. It's comparable in IQ to the 24-105 (at least) and takes you even wider than your current kit lens. You may not even find yourself needing the 10-22 unless you take a lot of expansive landscapes or interior shots. Again, it all depends on where your sweet spot is.

Hi Nick,

I'm currently using 60D with EFS 15-85. It's a great combo....

I suggest you go with this....
