Rule of thumb: you get what you pay for.

If you have specific requirements then the most expensive DX camera may not be the best FOR YOU, but in that case you ought to declare those when you ask the question.

Best features & build - D300s. The D7000 might be close enough, though, and has better image quality.

If you just want good pictures, and don't need the ton of extra features found on the D7000, one of the entry level models (D3200, D5100) might be enough.

There's what's best, and there's what's best for an individual. The best in terms of build quality is the D300s. The best in terms of image quality and features is probably the D7000.

If you like small light cameras and can do without some bells and whistles the D3200 or D5100 (or the soon to be available D5200) may be better for you.

I'd probably say the D7000 edges the D300/s.

I've had both, so I know a fair bit about them. Obviously the D300/s has Pro features whereas the D7000 is newer and more advanced, but is consumer based.

It is difficult to choose one "OVERALL" camera. So far the cameras available/released they can be grouped in two categories: Entry level and Pro.

When it is about Entry level (e.g. D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200) then the best is D5100 for sure. Considering current market price - D5100 is undoubtedly best entry level body.

When it is about Pro bodies like D90, D300 S and D7000, it is tough to choose one between D300 S & D7000. Pro guys who shoots alit in extreme conditions they prefer D300 S over D7000. But from price point of view D7000 gets an edge above D300 S.

I've had a D100, D200, D300s, and now a D7000. The D300s is the best for build, feel, focus, and features. The D7000 has a better sensor for cleaner high ISO pictures, and is the only reason I swapped from my D300s. Like others have said, a D300s with a D7000 sensor would be the best, but there is no such camera. If you can wait awhile maybe we will see this in a D400 or D7100??
