max..you can"t go wrong with this lens. it is my walkaround lens on my 1ds.

What are you shooting?
What are your expectations?
I am shooting landscape, portraits and family outside and indoors.

For the quoted price I expect extremely fast an sharp len much sharper and faster then the EF 28-135f/3.5-5.6 IS.

Will it meet my expectations?

max...absolutely

At first I found it a little on the heavy side - it took a few times using it to get use to it's weight. Especially coming from using a Sony Point n'Shoot. Once I got used to it I use it all the time. Now I have the pleasure of getting use to the weight of my new 100-400 - "and I thought the 24-70mm was heavy".

I had one and decided that it wasn't worth the extra cash for me. I've got some sample shots against the Sigma version at my gallery link below. I really like my 28-135 IS and use the Sigma for when I need a faster lens. I find the 70mm too limiting for an everyday lens. I've also found that the 28-135 IS works for most situations.

My ideal lens would be a 28-105 or 135 IS f4 or 2.8. I really wouldn't care about the size that it would be because I've got no problems with my 70-200L IS.

If you have a 1Ds, then I think it would be a great lens if you can live with the weight. If you have a 10D there is no such thing as a walk-around lens, that is if you mean a lens that can handle landscape and people photography etc. I have a 10D and tried the 24-70 and returned it.

First on the 10D it doesn't offer a wide angle experience. The short focal length, 24mm, is really just a slightly wide normal lens. It doesn't give the wide angle experience that a 20mm or 17mm focal length will give. For this reason if you are even moderately serious about landscape photography, you will be dissapointed.

The other problem I had with it was its weight. I am a big strong guy, but frankly carrying the 10D with the 24-70 on it was like using a medium format camera. I take one to one and half hour long walks on various trails where I do my landscape photography and I like to carry the camera attached to a tripod so I can set up quickly and take advantage of the current lighting, which can change quickly. With the 24-70 you need a pretty hefty tripod so that also adds weight.

The bottom line, I couldn't see spending that kind of money on a lens that really didn't meet my needs. I recognized that there is no such thing as a general purpose walk around lens for the 10D. For the 1Ds, yes, but not for the 10D. I currently using the Canon 20-35 3.5/4.5 zoom, 50 1.8, and 85 1.8. For much less money than the 24-70, in many respects this provides much more flexibility for both landscape and people photography.

Best of luck

You might investigate a used 28-70L. It's sweet. For a wide angle, look at the 16-35L or a Sigma 15-30. The L is expensive.

Schmil,

I love this lens. Originally, I tested 28-70 with my 10D but 24-70 feels better, is environmentally sealed and takes some incredible pictures. Yes, it is a bit heavy but the results are worth it.

Of course, it depends on what you plan to use the pictures for. Do you need to get large enlargements? Then go for it. If not, a softer lens will do just fine.

I'm not a pro by any standard but I love taking a lot of pictures and framing those that I really like. You need sharp lens for large pictures. This one IS sharp.

Keep in mind though that nothing will be as good as primes. To me, the difference is negligible.

I'd say get it, use it, and return it if you don't like it. Worst case, it will cost you 40 bucks in shipping.

hope this helps

I love this lens as well. Here are some comparisons to the 50 1.8. I feel the 24-70 is as sharp at all comparable apertures.

It is big though. The pictures on web sites don't really show the scale too well. It is about the size and weight of a brick.

I use this lens as a general walk around lens when I want quality images. However, I occassionally use the camera (10D) for snapshots. (not every one of our shots is a museum masterpiece but sometimes we just want a picture of friends at a restaurant). I then usually throw on the 50mm 1.4 and even use the built in flash - heaven forbid :)

I use it on my 10D and D30 and I am quite satisfied with it. Actually use it more often lately then my 70-200 2.8 (my favorite). It is a bit heavy to some but I've gotten used to the heavier L lenses over the past few years and do not even notice it now.
