Sad to see the last remnants of the "old Kodak" being sold.

That what's left of it is nothing but empty rhetoric.

Without doubt the knowledge how to produce the best colours, and how to get the best white balance ever, are amongst the sold patents. :-x

Sophocles couldn't have written a worse tragedy than the Kodak saga. Let's hope something can be salvaged from the mess.

Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and yours, Blackbear and I trust you all are well.

Ralph.

Merry Christmas to you and yours too, Ralph.

Merry Christmas to all here on KTF!!

As long as my Z990 and Z915 are still cranking out decent images, I'm happy. Talk about an American icon of recognition the world wide, everyone knew what the name represented.

Indeed, Kodak did die a long time ago. Lack of preparedness. Lack of foresight. Lack of risk-taking. Failure to listen to its own customers. Failure to follow up on its successes. The list goes on and on. And so... whereas I am sad to see a once-great American company die off as so many others have, in truth Kodak had it coming.

As Sactojim said, as long as my Kodaks are still cranking out decent images, I'm happy. How long my Z990, P880, DX7590, Z915 will last I don't know, but I'll certainly enjoy every moment using them.

In fact, I found myself pretty lucky to discovered the DX6440 that gave me the confidence to explore others Kodak digicam.

I'm glad that I'm among the last group of people who are still shooting and own some Kodak P&S.

I saw some recent P880 prices on eBay go up like crazy (asking price of $ 300,00!!!) And that particular camera wasn't even complete with hood, etc!

But if you keep on the look out for interesting Kodak's, they still can be found for good prices. That is , if you're interested, of course.
Hello again, Mart! I've been looking at eBay too and noticed the rising Kodak prices. There are exceptions of course and I've been fortunate to win - for the starting bid of 99p - two Kodak cameras and a printer/dock with part-used ink cartridge. The cameras are a CX7300 and CX6445 and both are claimed to be working. The battery compartment cover on the CX6445 "needs a bit of sellotape to hold it shut".

I only bidded out of interest to see what sort of price this lot would sell for and I had forgotten about it until some days later I received the eBay notification that I had won for the starting bid! So for less than £5 (the postage was £3.75) I should receive a welcome addition to my ever-growing photographic collection. By the way, I realise the CX7300 is a fixed focus job at 3Mp and is quite basic but the other has a 3X zoom at 4Mp and both have optical viewfinders. Hooray! The printer/dock I know nothing about so it's going to be most interesting to have a play with that. I worked out that the price per print from this device is about 50p per 6x4 and as they cost less than 10p at the photo kiosk - well, for me it's a non-starter! Will post a photo of my win asap.

Lets ALL start collecting Kodak digicams!!

Best wishes,

Ralph.

Kodak made some very decent cameras capable of excellent photography but let's be reasonable. I still have two Kodaks myself and I recognize their strengths and weaknesses. There are much better cameras in the marketplace today. Time does not stand still and Kodak's technology has been surpassed. Naturally we regret the demise of this once great American company but that is reality when you are so short-sighted and fail to listen to your customer base. Of course we're going to continue to use our Kodaks as long as they're serviceable but to suggest that some models are worth $300 is ridiculous. It's not so much that they're incapable producing stunning images which they are provided they are not blown up too large, but rather the fact that when they fail to work there will be brew parts and even fewer technicians to repair them.

Well, then prices will skyrocket, that's for sure :-D :-D

But be careful, there's also a lot of rubbish on eBay!

Agreed, James and that's why I like 'em :-).

If an older camera can deliver the results one wants, surely, buying a 'better' camera will be a waste of money and as for technology, I have not noticed any significant improvement in the photographic quality of posted images for a number of years.
...... but to suggest that some models are worth $300 is ridiculous.
I think only the camera's user can determine its worth.
It's not so much that they're incapable producing stunning images which they are provided they are not blown up too large.........
That's the trick isn't it! The smaller file sizes in the older Kodak digicams were complimentary to home computer performance at the time. Not to mention the price of flash cards.
...... but rather the fact that when they fail to work there will be brew parts and even fewer technicians to repair them.
I think 'brew' is a typo there, James but certain home-brewers/repairmen could well make use of the relative Kodak service manuals if the company would release them. Fat chance I suppose for I must assume they have some dollar value and maybe part of their Intellectual Portfolio but I think I have said this before. Pity really as there seems no shortage of peeps ready to have a stab at fixing and modifying things, just look at what's on YouTube.

A little-known fact is that I'm President of a certain Al Jolson Appreciation Society. I have now elected myself President of The Older Kodak Digicam Society :-).

(I still can't post smilies) :-(.

Ralph.

Ralph, it took me a while to discover how to add a smiley in the new forum software.

There is a header in the reply frame. In that header you can choose a number of items, like adding a picture, bold, italic or underlined characters. Also there's the possibility to add a smiley (limited options though).

Yes, Mart I have clicked on the header icon but simply get exactly as when I type.

Trial: :-| :-) :-P.

Must be something to do with the Chrome browser I suppose but I'm not capable of sussing it out. It's not important anyway but many thanks for your help.

I tried Internet Explorer and that's even worse because when I click on the icon the prompt goes straight to the top left of the page!

Regards,

Ralph.
