I need to take photos at my granddaughters' dance recital, does anybody have experience using the G15 with the lens adapter and teleconverter TC-DC58E?

Thanks,

Richard Southworth

Richard,

Shooting indoor, at moving target with no flash. It does not get any tough than that !!!

A teleconverter make matter even harder, it forces you to have smaller aperture and faster shutter speed

My G15 will is suppost to be here today I hope, but my advice may not be worth much.

My suggestion is go to one of the dance rehearsal, get close so you can use your 1.8 aperture, and take some picture and when the show comes, give up on taking photos ang just enjoy it instead

Please post some picture on how your photo's turn out.

Yes, I've fought this problem before with several larger cameras. However, a front mounted teleconverter does not necessarily reduce the aperture, the Olympus XZ-1 had large enough glass area to maintain same aperture.

Don't know about the Canon, will find out.

Ok, I bought one, interesting beast (see picture). It's a surprisingly large piece of glass, and with the included hood turns my svelte G15 into something more like a full size DSLR.

The good part is it does not change the aperture, i.e. with the teleconverter mounted one has a 196mm equivalent f2.8 lens (see two brick wall images), hopefully enabling some reasonable dance recital pictures (no flash allowed). It does require a menu change when attached, and the fn button does not seem to work for the teleconverter setting, even though it's an option. I did place it at the top of the favorites group, so it's not too much hassle to switch back and forth.

Stay tuned, after the Saturday recital I'll have a better idea of it's worth.

Thanks alot, you are going to cost me a couple of hundred more dollars. That set up looks really cool. The bad think is I was not thinking about get a teleconverter but now I am.

Richard,

That looks like it will do the job for you,....I wonder if you tried the onboard digital zoom in the G15. It might surprise you. I'm not sure if it can be combined with your TC or not, but the stand alone results were impressive to me, especially in video.

Yes, I tried the digital teleconverter. I took the same shot two ways, one with the dtc and one without. I then compared the two images, the one with the dtc at 100% and the one without at 200%. They were virtually identical, my conclusion is the dtc is equivalent to a crop. I shoot mostly raw, and the dtc isn't even offered as an option.

I guess it is useful to jpeg shooters who don't want to post-process, but there is no magic going on.

And here's a sample of what one can do with the G15 and teleconverter - ISO 3200, pp'd with ACR. Pretty much at the limit of the camera to get a decent shot, but certainly still usable.

A very nice photo indeed. Thanks for posting.

That a impressive Picture to be sure.

It looks Like I have to buy a converter for 34 dollar and a tele-converter for 200 to have a set up like yours.

And if I want to use a filter I will need a filter adaptor for 44 dollars???

Does that sound right to you??

Not sure, the Conversion Lens Adapter LA-DC58L unscrews in the middle, the part that attaches to the camera has an inside thread, appears to allow a 58mm filter to screw in, but I don't have a filter with which to verify. There was no documentation included, and I haven't been able to find any on the Canon website.

Hi Richard, I know this is an old thread but I am planning on buying the G16, the LA-DC58L adapter and the TC-DC58E teleconverter. Do you have any suggestions, tips or issues with this setup? It appears to do a wonderful job without distortion or vignetting. Thanks.
