RX1 EVF: size relative to camera?

Can anyone who's actually shot with the EVF comment on how it handles? It looks awfully large relative to the RX1 in pictures, but I'm sure it's hard to judge without holding.

Thanks.

It slides into position easily, more convenient than the NEX-5N EVF for sure. I'm a little concerned about the longevity of the contacts, though perhaps I needn't be. For that reason I prefer to leave it on. But that makes a huge difference in terms of how well it stows in any bag or pouch. It's a big negative.

The only other negatives are:
  • You would hope have an impressive and matching metal casing, but it doesn't. That would have justified the higher price.
  • Sometimes it unintentionally swivels up when you put it to your eye.
On the positive side:

The swivel rocks. I actually use it in the upright position 80% of the time! The new rubber eyecup is good. The view in e EVF is awesome, and better than any EVF to date. Awesome. It also unlocks another display mode on the LCD showing you all parameters, level and histogram at the same time.

Also to note that it comes with an extra eye cup, which I use because of my glasses. The one on the camera is too big for my glasses but the extra smaller one is perfect. The tilting feature is awesome and I use it for most my shots also. The EVF is actually smaller than I thought it would be, it suits the camera, well balanced. I leave mine off the camera in its case for protection, slide her back on when I need it.I use both the screen and EVF. WC

I think this is because we'll see it sold as an accessory for future NEX cameras too, but fully agree - they ought to have made it out of unobtainium to justify the price difference over the -5N EVF.

I have it on authority they originally planned to make the whole camera out of unobtanium, but predictably, the couldn't find any.

Mine only tilts, I got ripped ,where can I get the swivel one? :-) WC

Mine arrives in another week. You sure it is not metal? Touch it to your nose and see if it is cold.

The NEX 5N EVF is metal even though it looks plastic... took me dropping it on concrete from 2' in the air (still attached to the camera) to figure that out. Here was the damage... just a scratch:

Hmnnn... you might be right. I remember putting a nick like that in mine and it didn't seem like plastic to me.

At any rate I don't care much. At least it is black.

PC-ABS (Poly Carbonate-ABS) sorry guys and it feels cold just like metal ,ABS gets cold too. WC

Interesting. A tilting (or what...) EVF of real quality and size is something of a dream. Got one for Ricoh GX100, small and not so good. And have tried Minolta A2 with tilting EVF in camera, that's better. Then you can't lose it...

Together with the camera, awesome price. But no lenses to be bought.

In camera tilting EVF would be my ideal. I picture it as a kind of alternative to a pop flash. I don't use flash -- ever.

It is excellent and for me, a real plus when it comes to "lookin down" to take a picture over "there"

A main point for me: how it "stows", how large the pouch must be, maybe difficult to find one suited for the camera? And then you need a smaller "bag" or something for the EVF. Too expensive to lose or destroy. So how is it in real life? Not being negative, just practical thinking. Got enough of GX100...

It's just wretched this way. Don't have any illusions about this. It's great to use, and hard to stow/unstow (unless you are prepared to keep attaching and detaching the EVF), then it would be quite manageable, but a three step process.

I have a small NITE IZE pouch I used for the NEX. Same problem there with the 5N+EVF, not so much a problem for the NEX-7, though the body itself is a bit bigger.

I haven't tried to find the smallest pouch it could be moved in and out easily with the EVF attached, it would be pretty big due to the shape, position, and the free-tilting nature of the thing. I don't have a use for a pouch that big.

I just purchased a Tenba messenger bag, since I have to carry around a bunch of work related stuff any, and have a healthy size compartment there. Still awkward though. I actually end up lifting it out by the EVF rather than the body or strap.

I reluctantly conclude that with an EVF attached, it really requires a neckstrap if you aren't going to carry it ready in your hand, or keep it in a bigger bag.

However, I do have a friend who makes custom leather bags. It would be pricey, but I think I will ask him to prototype one for me. If he ever gets it done, I will post a picture.

Thanks, much as I thought. Just now happy with NX10 (30mm), and can find a smaller bag. Will probably wait for more small advanced cameras with in-built EVF.

I am using the Billingham Pola pouch and can confirm the RX 1 fits with the EVF attached. You place the camera with the lens across the width of the bag and move the EVF to the fully raised position and its a beautiful fit. Bag is expensive but beautifully made.
