Just posted: Our In-depth Sony SLT-A99 review

Great overall score for A99: 84%

D800 84%

5D3 82%

A99 "It stands out as the only full frame camera to offer in-body stabilization, an EVF and articulated rear screen." -- some of the main reasons I sold my D800 for A99 :)

"Photographers looking for outstanding high ISO performance" -- outstanding?
Peter actually the D800 has 82% and only the D800E has 84%.

Thanks for the review! I knew I had bought the right camera!

Stef.

Hmm, I guess I should retract my statements on the A99 being to expensive.

I will still have to wait for the prices to fall before I buy it though :)

I bought from the Sony store in Houston yesterday. They offered the camera with 3 years interest free credit. They also added a 4 year extended warranty / accidental damage insurance and 2 x 8GB SD cards for the listed US$2799. Not a bad deal I thought.

Sure...the day after I bought it! <grin>

So far, I'm agreeing with your "cons" especially on the AF points. What's up with that Sony?
Also...

"AF tracking accuracy lags behind its Nikon and Canon peers".

Will Sony ever catch up in the AF department? I thought the live-view nature of the SLT would provide better AF capability (or that is what Sony claimed).

So far in my BIF shooting A99 has yield more keeper rate than my Canon 7D (which is known for its pro-grade AF performance). EVF "slide show" effect is very much suppressed thanks to "only" 6 FPS burst rate. With fast SD card such as Sandisk 95m/s card there is hardly any wait time between shots.
Your results are what I would have expected. I wonder which cameras DPR considers the A99's peers.

That's a very good deal. Is this through their (Sony) card? I'm planning to get another A99 and if this is the deal, it's a no-brainer. Btw, great review DPR and congratulations Sony!

Not that i will buy that camera soon, but i am glad sony is getting more and more recognition. If only they would have released another camera with an ovf

Yes, this was using the Sony card, as you say it is a very good deal, as they normally want several hundred dollars for the extended warranty.

Thanks man. I'll check it out this weekend and see if I can grab one.

Congratulations Sony! A well-deserved award.

Vindication is in order.

Great review, but I will stay with my A77!

Lot of money to lay out, for me at least, it is not worth it. If I didn't already have an A77 I would most likely get it.

Kudos Sony, they have certainly upped their game lately

Not likely you will ever see OVF from Sony. Right now D600 is the closest thing to A99 aside from lesser shutter unit and other minor stuff, but you do get OVF and almost $800 saving.

What Sony store was that. I went to the one in the galleria and they only offered me two years. I wasn't there to buy any what I just wanted to play with. I took a flash card with me and took some pictures With it.

No, I'm terrifically pleased that Sony continue to push EVF technology since it's clear CaNikon aren't interested. Someone has to do it and imaging specialists like Sony couldn't be a better choice.

hi
Thanks for the review

did you managed to test it in action shoot like panning a moving car etc?

the one thing the EVF concerns me most is the sequential shots while keeping the camera on the moving subject.

I THINK THIS SHOULD be your standard test for EVF cause its the weakest point.
Also when shooting birds in flight, or against a bright sky.
Sometimes you just cant see the bird against the bright sky.
Again the weak point of EVF

Hope you consider adding this scenarios in your test for EVF.
