very much OT - what governs ebbs and flows of users' activity here, on the NEX forum??

there are times when this forum is teeming with posts and messages, and other periods when almost nothing happens - are there any predictors & rules?

a good theme perhaps for at least a master thesis in sociology or ethnology of communications :)

For me at least it's tied to product releases, new lens releases, photo industry shows...and then there are the unpredictable times when I need help for something and search, and if that doesn't work I'll post a question. Otherwise I like to scan daily just to see what's cookin' out there that I might not know about.

I find time of week and year will determine posts. Also maybe the time zone.

I always like seeing spring posts this time of year from our folks in the southern hemisphere. About when us in the north are getting slammed with snow :)

I think Friday evenings are generally slow.

Finally, new camera announcements generate huge amounts of interest (i.e. things are settling down a bit form the NEX 6 and 5R announcements, and the 10-18mm is available now, etc.

As with kazkioken, my presence tends to coincide with product releases, before/during/after.

An added determinant is my level of general disgust with the forums. Granted, it's really only just one or few trolls/posters/threads at any given time that contributes to this sentiment, but having no interaction with anybody outside of the forums... it's hard to separate everything. The general feeling then becomes not-on-forums = neutral, on-forums = aggravated/frustrated/disgusted-at-human-pettiness/self-justification-out-on-display.

To be fair, I'm sure some obviously non-trolling posters feel the same way about my "contributions" sometimes.

In my opinion and experience, the three primary determinants are product releases, troll activity, and repetitive unresearched and lazy noob posts.

I tend to be online more frequently with the first and far less frequently due to the second and third.

New equipment certainly causes a surge in posting but I find myself posting less than in the past. A lot of my posts are critical of Sonys design decisions & a lack of a cohesive strategy in the lens department but most readers are upset & unsettled by criticism & I know that I often come across as being too negative but I think that sometimes it is essential to put manufacturers & marketing departments on the spot.

I have participated in various forums for as long as DPR has been on the Net & I have seen a rise & fall in the general quality of contributions. Many experienced & well qualified people seem to have stopped contributing & the general level of expertise seems to have fallen.

This forum has a very mixed group of users , some being relatively beginers while others are hardened DSLR users & sometimes these two groups look at issues from entirely different perspectives. This is not necessarily bad but can, at times , lead to misunderstanding & conflict.

It is good to point out flaws not just to inform the manufacturer (this probably isn't the best forum for that) but to help the users work-around problems.

My impression is that some experts have gotten tired of the mess and left. It's all part of the fun of an online forum as far as I'm concerned. ;-)

Especially when people have strong beliefs that should be applied to everyone. There is not a perfect camera anyway, but not everyone needs the level of perfection demanded by some enthusiasts.

  • sadly yes - there was a very substantial outflux of more knowledgeable users from most forums over the past few years;
  • resulting in almost no-activity state for many communities here;
  • partially the creation of the new, non-gear but rather thematic-oriented ones is responsible,
  • partially unfortunate decisions by DPR of changing time proven format that worked pretty well for over a decade;
  • right now it is pretty tough to edit one's post in a sensible way - much tougher than even few months back;
  • partially some quite false moves like attributing e.g. RX-1 to be grouped with P&S where it withers :( ;
