Long exposure noise reduction in LX5 and ZS7

We're going to Iceland and shooting some long exposure pictures at night. Between us, we have an LX5 (max shutter speed around 4 minutes), ZS7 (60 sec) and ZS20 (15 sec). It seems that there is no way to turn off the long exposure noise reduction on these cameras, effectively halving the number of pictures that we can take, which is particularly annoying when you're trying to shoot the aurora, which can be transitory.

I've read of people manually turning their cameras off during the dark frame period, and subequently using a spearate dark frame "picture" in PS to remove the noise.

Before I tried that, I wanted to ask if anyone has done this on this forum, and what their experience was--the last thing I want to do is to brick the camera. Or if they have any other suggestions, short of buying another camera!

TIA.

Not tried it but switching-off half way through is most likely to result in failure of the whole shot. Not used my TZ30 yet - still in Santa's sack but what about doing a burst and stacking. Also, with LX5, using the multiple exposure option to overlay images. Just ideas that would need some experimentation. As a reserve, I'd be seriously thinking about using one of the TZs to shoot an HD movie to maximise the chance of capturing something. Good Luck. Stuart

PS - if using Manual mode for a long exposure, does the LX5 still do the dark exposure for subtraction?

Sorry about the delay in response, @windmillgolfer, but I do not seem to have been notified of your responns.

I'll try the multiple exposure route to see if that works on either camera.

I know that in the manual mode the LX5 still does the dark exposure.

thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know if anything works.

I take it that you know that there is an option to turn off High ISO Noise Reduction on the LX5?
Hi Nerja:

Thanks for writing. I couldn't find a High ISO Noise Reduction--how does one get there? The only Noise Reduction I could find was in the Film Mode menu, and there the Noise Reduction ranges between 2 and -2. I tried it at -2, just in case, but it still does the long exposure noise reduction.
