G15 and P7700 review

Just ordered a P7700 from B & H. Could not pass on the price they were selling it for today. I will compare to my G12 and see how it stacks up. I know I will like the longer reach it has.

ddan... I would be very interested in your comparison between the two cameras, since I own the G12 and looking at upgrading to the P7700 if/when it stops working. The extra 2 MP's and 140 vs 200mm reach is something I would like "IF" the IQ is better. Please post some pics and let us know how it compares with your G12, thanks in advance.

I shoot with both Canon and Nikon products (love 'em all) - but if I had a choice of which to get (being confined to only one), I'd get the P7700 (which I did several days ago). Of course, I have the G12, S100, and SX50 - and yes, I also have the P7100 (all of which I'm keeping).

So to say that one spanks the other....is rather fanboyish (and childish). I could be quite comfortable with any of them - 'cause in the end, the user behind the viewfinder (LCD) determines the overall quality of the image.

I am debating between the 2. I had owned the P7000 back in the day and all I can say was, that camera was terrible. It could not fous, it was not sharp, the buffer was horrid and the list goes on. My fear is that this trend slightly trickled back in. Or am I wrong? All the samples I have seen look better to me via the G15 from Dpreview, DcResource and such. Any thoughts from current owners?
Hi.

I have the P7700.

My experience:

The focus is plenty fast, and the images are very sharp (in many situations it is an adequate substitute for my D5100 when I don't want to carry it around).

Keep this in mind. Without pixel peeping the images probably look almost the same (and I have seen many images showing more detail with the jpegs from the P7700). AND, since the images will be pretty darn close, also consider that the P7700 gives you almost 50% more reach.

This is my first Nikon P&S in 10 years - have been going with the Canon lately. I can easily say that I am happier with this camera than any of my prior Point and Shoots. More zoom was important to me and I was willing to give up a bit of the image quality to get it, but with this camera I found that I did not need to give up the quality to get the zoom (even though I really wanted at least 10x zoom - but it does not exist in a quality compact point and shoot).

Thanks Juggernaut!!! I really appreciate your review and feedback on real life use of the Nikon CoolPix P7700.

I have one more question for you. Can you upload a full resolution image, either Jpeg or Raw - @ the long end 170-200mm? I just want to see how it performs.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I'm not the person you were asking, but here's one at the long end. Hand held. Not a great composition and there was a lot of dust in the air, at dusk. Distance from where I was standing to downtown is appx 11 miles.

Correction to my earlier post - this was a distance of about 11 KM, not 11 miles. :-|

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the late reply - been short on time.

Not sure this is what you are looking for or not.

The first image is wide angle, the second is max zoom.

Also sorry but these were taken through a window - you can see the window reflection on the wide angle shot (will take some not through a window if this does not show you what you want to see).

Were you looking for scenery or something closer to show the zoom?

Wide angle

Here are some comparisons

between Panasonic LX7, Nikon P7700, Canon G15, and Olympus XZ-2

Panasonic LX7 ISO3200

Nikon P7700 ISO3200

Canon G15 ISO3200

Olympus XZ-2 ISO3200

All images are JPEGs resized to 1200 lines per height for on-screen view.

LX7 has the worst IQ, Olympus has probably the best clarity.

Let's see - I've been posting on these forums since 2002 - have posted thousands of images (do a search) - close to 15,000 postings in all. And you've been on these forums for less than a 100 posts (total) - and you're throwing down a gauntlet? Unbelievable - but hey, if that whet's your willey, more power to ya.

So just type in on various forum search blocks (specifically, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Panasonic), and you will be amazed at the images I've uploaded, compared, and what have you.

Yes, I've owned quite a few digital cameras - tried over 91 since 2001 - loved many of them. The ones in my profile are the ones I currently still maintain because I love their performance parameters - and some are quite old, yet still have superb color rendition. So when when I see "beats the pants off," or "kicks ass," or "spanks...," I chuckle because how one views a camera is purely subjective.

Ben let's just agree that we see things differently. You do probably have a ton of knowledge in the world of photography. You may not agree with 99% of what I say but that's alright. I believe what I believe and you the same.

Shall we start over? I apologize for my behavior..

But to clarify, my initial posting was just to find out what "spanks" means in this case and that I found the term quite humorous. And as to the number of cameras I've owned, I've gotten good use from all of them and I managed to keep them all - up until a year or so ago, when the Misses gave me an ultimatum to get rid of them - so I sold them. So much for hoarding....

As for my postings - trust me, save perhaps for a few cat photos - there have been hundreds of images posted of portraits, scenics, and other scenarios over the years, along with tips and other suggestions how to make photographic endeavors a little easier to those posters who may have been having a difficult time with this or that camera model.

And finally, to end this whole matter (hopefully)....your use of the term "old man" may actually have you shaking your head in disbelief in this instance, especially if you've ever met me in person. I believe this "old man" may give you a run for your money in many endeavors.

I understand and to be honest, I think it was that time of the month LOL. Ill be honest, it was amazing to see how many threads about you that were absolutly mind blasting. PPL spoke so highl;y of you and I am in no way wanting to disrespect you. I truly am sorry for my ignorance. I wanna learn photography but how can I lear if I throw my camera at the professor? Right.

You sound like a good egg - and there's lots of information on this forum (and other forums) to really help. Just keep tuning in from time to time - although I wish, on the Nikon forum, there was more interest (compared to other forums like the Canon forum). Hopefully, as more folks purchase more coolpix models, things will change.
