Can I set up my "new " Olympus OM5 to show taken image on LCD screen?

Sorry for my crazy question but maybe I should just use the CD I got in the box with the camera. I'm using you guys as a camera manual. If you can bear with me, I'd like to be able to see the image immediately after I've taken it on the LCD. That is automatic on my D700 but probably requires a menu search on my OM5. This camera is made for "geeky" photographers and not for old "ungeeky" film photographer like myself!

answering my own question, yes.

Is it possible to set up so that screen is off, other than displaying just shot image for a few seconds, as set in rec view (unless you push review, info, ok, etc.)? In other words, I don't want LV (unless I push the LV button) but I do want to see the just taken image in the rear screen.

  1. Press the Menu button,
  2. Press the up arrow to get to the Wrench menu section (you can use the down arrow too, but it is at the end of the list),
  3. Press the OK button or the right arrow to enter into the Wrench menu,
  4. Scroll a little down untill you reach the Rec View item,
  5. Press the OK button or the right arrow to get to the Rec View options,
  6. You will be presented with several options : off, auto (plus the play back icon), durations going from 0.3 sec. up to 20 sec.
  7. Use the down arrow rot scroll through these options and choose the auto playback option.
  8. You will loose the possibility to choose the duration, but the review picture will always automatically appear on the LCD, whether you are shooting with the E-VF or the LCD. You have to press the shutter halfway to return into shooting mode.
  9. If you pick any duration, the the review picture I'll appear on the E-VF if you took your shot with the VF or on the LCD if you were shooting using the LCD.
Auto playback means that you enter into playback mode instead of review mode. You swill be able to do just anything you can do in playback mode. What is displayed then is what you have chosen for the playback mode; you can scroll through these options using the info button.

Using the review mode, the picture can be displayed a little faster after the shot. I find that it is fast enough with the E-M5 and like o have the shadows/highlights blinkies on.

By the way I have firmware 1.5 on my camera, you may need that to be able to have that option. Playback is only available on the LCD and many want to get the review in the EVF, in contrast to you.

Ok, I've gone through every step. The gist of it seems to be that you cannot view the image just taken, automatically, if you're using the electronic viewfinder.........Yes, it works if you're using the extended arms out shooting position that is anathema to us older shooters. We use our foreheads as a steadycam to insure sharper images. I guess the mindset has changed on this subject. I found this out on my recent trip to France when I asked a young ( 28 ) tourist to photograph my wife and me. He held my Nikon D700 at arms length and was surprised to see no live view image on the back LCD. I had to tell him to put is eye to the viewfinder! What a novel approach.

Works fine for me !! Try pressing the LV button before shooting . . .
Thanks, that get's me half-way there. With it 'enabled' I get an image review on the back display when shooting with back display and an image review in the EVF when shooting with the EVF ... but getting the image review on the back LCD while shooting with the EVF still does not work.

Maybe it is just habit from optical viewfinder cameras to expect the image review on the back LCD and though I would claim that the back LCD is higher resolution (and/or otherwise better) than EVF, I am not 100% sure. But regardless, I still feel that is more 'natural' to review images on the back LCD probably because it easier not having to hold your camera up high in front of your face and you can actually see the buttons you are pressing to interact with the image.
It works for me, whether the eye sensor is set to on or off, but the review picture appears for a brief instant into the E-VF before switching to the LCD.

I have the last firmware update, 1.5.

Yes, you can, look lower in this thread to see my answer.

Eureka! It seems that if I keep my eye on the EVF and extra second after I've taken the picture, I can see the just taken image in the EVF, and, after that extra second, if I look down, I can now see the image in the LCD.

Olympus, I shall not doubt thee!

With all the electronic sophistication built into this camera, I figured there was a way to get what I wanted.

And thanks to all for putting up with me on this frustrating voyage. I felt like a guy who only drives an automatic trying out a 5 speed stick for the first time!
