Dear All,

I am planning to purchase a DSLR camera mainly for taking pictures of my son. I have narrowed it down to two models: nikon d5100 and sony a57.

The features that are important to me are the following:

1) I would like to be able to both take pictures and shoot HD video. Is the quality of the video from these two models similar to the one from a camcorder?

2) Most of the pictures will be indoors, usually under low light conditions. Which of the two will perform better?

3) I read that the kit lens of a57 is quite noisy when shooting video. Is this true and if yes, is there a way to fix this?

4) The nikon d5100 is cheaper than the sony a57. I am willing to spend the extra amount of money for the sony if it is worth it.

Thank you in advance. I am looking forward for your replies.

I think the 5100 is a great camera. I cannot reccomend any sony SLT cameras. the optical viewfinder is important stay away from SLTs. I am sure the canon equivalent is quite good two

shooting video with a dslr is surprisingly challenging. most consumer video devices have so much dof you could almost not make a video that wasnt sharp so autofocus worked. with a dslr this is not true thats what makes the video look so professional. but at the same time that means you need to use manual focus and its tricky you need to focus in a smooth intentioal way in video witch auto really cant do. dslr video takes a lot of practice just want to warn you

well slt camera burn more than a half stop of light in there translucent mirror so thats not good. the d5100 is good but more expensive cameras will beat the snot out of it

its probably a screw drive style lens if it is noisey. the fix is to have a lens with an internal motor

the d5200 is out or coming out. i am sure it will enhance your low light performance. also buying the 50mm f1.8 g $200ish will do wonders for your low light performance and will also do wonders for your ability to take higher quality sharper pics. kit lenses really arent good well standard primes are excellent. you also will get to play with Depth of field alot more with the 50mm lens witch is huge
Thank you in advance. I am looking forward for your replies.
