You think the G3/GX1 are heavily discounted?

Summer last year I got my G3 with kit zoom for less than 500 pounds, so it is now about 2/3 the price or with 1/3 off. I got mine with LR licence and 5-warranty. Currently there is a 50 quid cashback so my incentive was somewhat larger on the license alone. A big discount for sure, esp. if you consider the case alone without comparing elsewhere. So what if you cast your eyes wider?

About 13 months ago, the Nikon V1 with kit zoom came onto the market at about 900 pounds. Today you can get it for 283, or 2/3 off!

So the G3 deals are not really that amazing after all.

I might get a V1 just to play with the fast AF, if this continues further.

Those who wait till the end of a camera models run definitely get rewarded for being patient . Wex are even throwing in a £39 Nikon bag with the V1 and 10-30

The Nikon 1 system is pretty neat regarding AF { I have played about using my Nikon FF lenses on an adapter } it is a pretty tempting offer. Built in EVF , matches the image quality of the 12mp mFT bodies, fast AF etc . And its nearly Christmas lol. One things for sure digital cameras are not a wise investment best just to use and abuse them.

I don't know about other places, but here a friend just bought a brand new G3 + kit lens for $299 from B&H. That's spanking no matter how cheap other cameras have been at times.

I'm just hoping that the E-M5 will someday be on clean out special for $599. ;) I've always been one to wait for the right deal to come along, but I've noticed that the E-5 has retained it's price because there has been nothing E-7ish to knock the price down.

Cheers,

Seth

And then there's Olympus. The E5 has dropped over a couple of years but nothing like the standard model and the OM-D EM-5 has held its price remarkably well. On the other hand I bought my E620 when they had fallen off thhe edge of the world and now 2 years on people are paying more s/h than I paid new and theat's when 4/3s prices are supposedly in freefall. Economics and marketing is black magic.

When I see deals like this I have to ask myself why folk buy some of the pretty pricey P&S cameras , I guess to some people mFT is just to big and heavy :)

there are some great bargains for all makes and models right now, especially on the lower end or entry type stuff, but as tech as moved on they really are quite good, it's a very good time to be buying a camera right now.

Well to be fair the fact that this is the "only" new camera in the FT range puts it in a different position , any one tied into FT is in a bit of a like it or lump it scenario. Though ,other than the ageing sensor the E-5 is a very well built and featured camera.

Some of the current seasonal give aways like the Samsung models with a free tablet and £50 off are pretty sweet offers

Yes, but this is affecting some of top of the line luxury items like the V1, and when that happens even more radical discounts is what we see.

wow those are really great deals on the V1 in the UK.
With these sorts of price drops I find it so hard to understand why average people spend $1000 on a mirrorless digital body when in 1-2 year it will be 50-66% off and in 3-4 years maybe in the $100-200 range.

mirrorless seems to suffer from depreciation much more than DSLRs though. NEX5, NEX3, GF1, E-P1, E-P2, G1, G2, GH1 are all in the $100-200 range while older 2008 generation DSLRs seem to be in the $400 range (D90, 50D or even the 2006 D300).

For me it means waiting for "end-of-model deals" and a personal rule of not spending more than $500 on a digital camera body. For others I know it means buying the latest and selling while they can still get value out of it.

I know people buy these expensive (fast depreciating) items out of passion which is why we have the "luxury goods" markets (expensive cameras, cars, motorcycles, shoes, purses, jewelry). I guess I am just a bit practical when it comes to cameras (but I do enjoy taking pictures and the discussions here).

but yes a nikon V1 is very tempting right now :)

My plan is to wait another year then consider a G5 or a PL5, but the V1 is very tempting...

There are deals on point and shoots too. The newest models are always the most expensive. The G3 is only cheap because of the G5 and GH3. But yeah, I know what you mean. My mom got an XZ1 rather than an E-PL2 even though the price of the point and shoot was quite a bit more last year. I think she made the right decision for her as the XZ1 is a very smart and versatile little camera.

good plan. Also have a look at the E-PM2.

I am really impressed with the E-PM2 ergonomics. Yes it is marketed as a beginner camera but it actually feels faster/easier to manual control than the E-PL5 for me. E-PM2 has a fn button on top near the shutter (something the E-PL5 does not have). Also the flush (not-flip) screen makes it easier for me to find and push buttons by feel. The E-PM2 has a total of 11 buttons most of which can be reassigned so it is not like the GF3 or E-PM1 mostly-touch-screen type cameras. E-PM2 feels like a mini GF1 or E-P2 to me.

my plan is to wait until spring/summer and decide between the NEX7, E-M5 (OMD) and E-PM2+EVF depending on where the prices have dropped (and if olympus has that new external EVF that has been rumored about).

I wouldn't say they "suffer" from depreciation, but I guess it's all how you look at it. The depreciation is quick because these mirrorless cameras are developing more quickly and replaced more quickly than DSLRs. There was an time when DSLRs were improving quickly and being replaced quickly and it was the same story.

I don't think anyone is suffering really. Essentially, everyone is doing well, new models are coming out, and old models are being snapped up. There will always be early adopters and late adopters, and mirrorless cameras are being replaced quickly because they are popular and the market is thriving, so the companies are making money. People willing to wait get a great deal.

Best,

Seth--

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?
