Hey all, I just got back from a 2000 mile roadtrip in Utah's National Parks. As usual, I brought my Nikon D800 to film with and thought I'd share the HD video.

Utah "Grand Circle" HD

It was a 2-week journey and quite exhausting with all the hiking. The route is known as "The Grand Circle," traversing through the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Natural Bridges, Arches, Canyonlands, Deadhorse Point, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Bryce Canyon, and Zion parks. My personal highlights of the trip were the hike to the Subway, Buckskin Paria Gulch, Willis Creek, and the various Anasazi Indian ruins, so look out for those :)

I shot with the Nikon D800, mostly on the 24mm f/1.4G Nikkor and 85mm f/1.8G Nikkor. There are several shots included from the Sony A99 as well, shot by my friend on the 24mm, 85mm, and 135mm zeiss primes.

Comments and critique welcome! I'm always trying to improve my imagery.

Cheers,
Patrick

VERY nice! Really enjoyed the mix of stills and video. Going to Bosque del Apache NM next week, I have to try it with my rig...

Thanks!!

Excellent job...I like the way the time lapse, live action, and those brought to the edge of the cliff shots were edited together, as well as the non landscape shots like the horses were used. Think I might've flipped the last two scenes though. Not your typical video.

Very nice work.

Very well done. Nice stills, time lapse, and editing.

Your work beautifully and powerfully captures the majesty of this region.

Awesome work Patrick, I must say I've enjoyed all your videos! Interesting that you don't use an ultra wide and your widest lens is the 24mm. Well done :)

Thanks for the comments!

lol, as for lenses, I used to have the 14-24mm f/2.8G and it was beautiful. But, I traded it for the 24mm f/1.4G prime since the size/weight is smaller, and I found myself rarely going wider than 20mm - the distortion gets too extreme at that point for me. But in a vast landscape like Utah, I did miss that lens especially when surrounded by 3 other photographers all with the 14-24! This was at mesa arch (the sunrise arch in the beginning of the video)... Horseshoe Bend also just begs for an ultra-wide - it's much larger than I imagined :) On the other hand, in shooting video, the f/1.4 does come in handy afterdark since the slowest shutter speed on the D800 is 1/25th. But, photography is a bunch of tradeoffs after all.

Thanks for checking out my other videos :) My other personal favorites were the BVI and Kyoto vids.

Good sense of place. I kinda liked the music as well.

All in all you took us on your journey, and I for one liked it very much.

Also, an excellent mix of regular video and time lapse. Very compelling.

It literally put me there. You have an amazing sense of videography. You will do very well in this field. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video - simplicity can be awfully difficult to achieve, but you do a wonderful job in telling the story. Having lived in Arizona for a short period, it makes we want to return.

enjoyable scenery and snippets of your hike - but there's the main feature movie? I found too many scenes were just developing when you fast cut to yet another location, so while its all an enjoyable watch and magnificent locations, I found it frustrating and feel like I've not seen anything fully. Agree with the earlier comment, 2nd to last sunset was the natural end to the show.

Unbelieveable tour! Amazed at how smooth your shots are when walking through the narrow tunnels? Did you have a vibration rig for the camera? Superb!
I stabilized on the glidecam hd-2000 - it helps a lot, but is still something I'm trying to improve! I usually do a shot a few times if I have the time for it, and am just happy I managed not to run off a cliff.
