I am purchasing a new digital camera for my wife and was wondering what your thoughts are on the differnce between the two cameras. My wife is relatively a novice, but has aspirations of photography being a hobby. Which one is better at just taking pictures automatically, vs manually etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I feel the G2 will be the better choice..It has a flashshoe and it's not really hard to use.

These are two different classes of cameras in the sense of size, weight, ergonomics, etc. This probably is more important than the differences in features between the two cameras. She should handle them both and see which she prefers and which will fit her lifestyle.

I would think a G2 would be better

I´m also wondering whether to buy the S45... it´s smaller and for a woman, 10 mm can make a lot of difference. Also, the retracting lens with the cover is very nice for a tavelling lady. I think they both deliver excellent images and shouldn´t "limit life" from that perspective.

They have the same fueatures (almost) so I would buy the S45. If you got a camera which is too heavy (like the G2) then you won't take it with you and then the best shots won't be taken.
