How to turn off XZ-1 NR?

Hi guys,

I just bought a XZ-1 not too long ago and am impressed with its performance. I have some questions regarding the NR though.

1) If I shoot in RAW, does the camera apply the NR algorithm?

2) If I turn off NR in Oly Viewer 2, is there NR applied? (I ask because I don't seem to see any difference between JPEGs OOC and exported JPEGs from raw files with "low" NR applied).

Any assistance is much appreciated. TIA!

Something is going wrong. When I saved out RAWs from OV2, they were very much more detailed then the smeariness I got from the JPEGs. Does your image have any fine details to smear away to begin with?

I just received my second XZ-1, could not pass up the $199 price and I already own the VF-2 I use with other Olympus and Panasonic four thirds cameras. I don't own my original XZ-1 any longer that I first purchased when the camera was just released years ago because I didn't care for the smeary detail in jpegs so got rid of it. My new camera acts like an entirely different beast from my first sample of the XZ-1 with none of the jpeg smearing in fine detail areas such as foliage. I shoot mostly landscapes so I shot some raw and jpeg together in a detailed landscape scene using a tripod and IS turned off and developed the raws in OV2 using the no noise reduction applied option and after closely comparing to the jpegs I could not tell one from the other. Jpegs do need a bit of sharpening in pp just as the raws do but they look great just loaded with detail.

Are there 2 different versions of this camera floating around or maybe quirky quality control? One version smears detail in jpegs and raw is the fix. The other has very good jpegs where shooting raw and using no noise reduction in raw development adds no further detail.

I love the second version of the camera I just received. I tested out the lens and f/4 seems to be the sweet spot through most of the range. If you are using f/5.6 or higher you will get reduced sharpness to your shots. I use Natural mode with -1 saturation, 0 contrast and +1 sharpening. This works for me and with a little pp in Lightroom 4 the jpegs look great and even the ones from my OM-D although noticably better still won't embarrass them. Could explain why some people love the IQ of this camera and others hate it. I remember I sure hated my first one.

I got my XZ-1 recently from Amazon as well. I would be shocked if they didn't come from the same batch. Mine definitely did have the infamous smearing. Taking a picture of a dog resulted in a dog with a smooth coat instead of hair. Raw was an entirely different matter. The dog had hair again.

Smearing is mostly an issue with higher ISO (like 200 and above).

I have to admit I stick to ISO 100 with the XZ-1 but my first XZ-1 smeared even there, this one does not.

That's what my first XZ-1 did exactly. With this one I have now you get no added fine detail using raw with noise reduction removed but the dog hair is already there in jpeg. I do have to add sharpening though which I rarely have to do with my E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PM1, or OM-D E-M5. My EP-2 on the other hand which is a very nice camera benifits from sharpening.

Maybe a firmware updated produced an improvement. I normally shoot in Raw and I found Oly Viewer to be just as useful as LR4 in producing clear, detailed images. Now I'll have to try some JPGs to see whether I can do worse!

Could you guys do us a favor? Take some (in door) photos at ISO 200 in RAW+JPEG. Open the RAW file in OV2, set zoom to 1:1, move to an area that is relatively dark, and set NR to "Off". If you are using Windows version of OV2, you should see a change in image quality (more noise). Then compare the image side by side with the JPEG the camera generated.

If you don't see any significant difference, I would be kicking myself for not buying one when Amazon had it for $200.

I just picked up an XZ-1 with the clip-on EVF because I didn't want to lug my OM-D or M8 around Las Vegas. I can confirm the jpeg smearing which I found distressing. The companion RAW shot was sharp, but noisy. The lighting, while in doors was very bright, there being very large windows and sunlight coming in from behind me. I can say, however, that the outside shots, especially of the dam taken from the new high bridge were outstanding.

Of course, noise can be dealt with in LR4 or CS5 and even though greater noise can be expected from a small sensor than from an APSC or MFT it was still disappointing. Maybe for a point and shoot, I should take it back and get a Fujifilm X10 instead even though it is not pocketable or better yet, the Fuji XF-1. Both have larger CMOS sensors

I just got the EZ-1 from Amazon and am selling it. The smearing from indoor shots is bad and frankly I want to take indoor shots of a baby. I need a camera than can go ISO 400+ and get decent results.

I have had an RX-100 for a week on loan and it is far better although costlier.

I picked up a $199 XZ-1: I find if you shut it DOWN, meaning shoot Mute, -2,-2,-2, the smearing is not evident; check my Gallery, first 10 or so pictures; SOOC !

Pardon my ignorance, but what does this mean (or which menu options are you talking about)?

Mute, -2,-2,-2,

Does this apply to JPEG too, or just RAW?

I believe you get to this by pressing the menu button, select Picture Mode. Hit right dial button, select option Muted, then Set Contrast to -2, Sharpness to -2 and Saturation to -2. I have not tried it yet though. It would be great if this works.

Thanks. So this doesn't technically disable NR, it just offsets or compensates for the default NR (or minimizes its effect)?

I just got the camera on Friday. This is JPG out of camera.

I'm not sure why I bought an XZ1, given I have EM5 and EPL1, but it is a lot nicer than my Canon Elph's.

To me, there seems to be some smearing of detail in the vegetation on the verandah roof. But this only appears at the highest magnification. Step down a notch and it looks very sharp. I wonder whether this smearing problem is a real one or one created by the software.

In either case, the smearing is not as severe as that which I can see when I expand some of my JPEG shots taken with a Panasonic FZ150, a camera which never seemed to be criticised for lack of image detail.
