Weird Specks inside of the lens in my HS30EXR...

So i recently bought an HS30EXR, i unpacked it & everything seemed just fine. Took a few pictures, everything was fine and all, but i needed to clean my lens. Strangely, as i was looking to find the dirty parts of my lens, i saw a weird thing. It was like a circle of snowflakes trapped on the underside of my primary lens. It really hasn't had any detrimental effects, but i'm confused as to what they are. The ring thickens and thins from the top rim to the bottom rim, but im confused & concerned. I had bought it from an electronics store, but im slightly concerned that the person running it took the camera apart to check it out. If any of you have any similar stories, please feel free to let me know.

By your definition most likely it's fungus. If the camera is on warranty (it must be) - take it back to the store for replacement. Fungus should not propagate in new, tight and clean lens - therefore it's a factory defect or careless pre-sale handling and storage.

Well, i do live in a very humid place (Korea to be exact) so i think that could be a possibility.
My only concern with that possibility is that they seem rather crystalline, so as if someone had a DIY crystal kit going on in there, and they only appear at a certain angle. I'm unaware what a fungus in a lens would look like so i'm probably wrong. Thanks for the reply!

Google for pictures. It may look crystalline - even like frost on window glass (if you ever saw one). Humid climate only adds to my suspicion. For how long did you own the camera? Even with no precautions taken (I always keep a sack of silica gel in camera bag when not in use) it must take months to form to that "crystalline" stage. Anyway, fungus during warranty period - it's warranty issue.

That's a factory defect for sure although mine has some mold formation now right at the center of the lens. It has affected most of my shots putting haze and purple blobs if the subject is backlit. fAfter the holidays, I will send mine for cleaning or repair.

hi joms!

are you sure the fungus is what's causing haze and purple blobs? i also have that problem when taking backlit photos and it's one of the reasons why i'm frustrated with the HS30. i don't have any visible growth and i always store my camera with a bag of silica gel.

It worsened it Mark. The purple blob will normally appear if you point the HS30 like 60 deg upward and shoot a backlit subject. Now even at 45 deg or lower the center of the scene will become hazy like in this example...

I had owned the camera for about 3 days before i noticed the specks. I bet the re-seller had it for much longer though.
