.. until 1957, that is, when we gained our independence.

Oh well, I'm not THAT interested in history lol.

What I thought I'd share with you is one legacy the British left behind.

Fraser's Hill, 2 hour's drive away from Kuala Lumpur, was developed by the British so that they could get away from the heat & humidity of Kuala Lumpur. Boy, am I glad they did, coz that's where my family & I go on occasion for a weekend getaway. The temperature here averages 19 to 25 degrees Celcius, a typical montane habitat.

You get to see quite a few samples of British architecture, one of which is the bungalow we stay at:

Can anyone tell me if these doorknobs are still in fashion?

Kids do have fun here too!

The land surrounding the bungalow has an eerie feel to it (some would say it suffers from lack of upkeep), so, when you're walking back to it in the late evening, the scene can very much look like something out of the film Psycho:

Looking out the window of the HUGE master bedroom:

You might have noticed that there is quite a lot of flora around the bungalow, which gives opportunities for some interesting nature pics:

Not forgetting the fauna (my fav, or course :-) ):

I DON'T have any respectable pictures of birds coz I don't have teleconverters and/or a DSLR .. anyway, here's a hummingbird (focused using viewfinder with continuous mode turned on, cropped):

Walking out the front door in early morning light, you're greeted by scenery which could very well have been taken right out of the movie The Lord of the Rings:

Tons of palm trees here too:

... and a waterfall:

There you have it. Most pictures taken during the day were with the camera set with Cloudy white balance in order to impart a warm colour and also offset the slight bluish ambient light. The normal post-processing adjustments were done in Photoshop.

Hope you enjoyed this post!

Hi,

Two years ago I planned to go to Malaysia for holidays. Unfortunately i couldn't find anybody to come with me (too expensive) so i had to give up my dream of visiting your beautiful country...I hope i can come sometimes.

Do you have any pictures from pulau and tioman island or borneo?

I went to Pulau Tioman 2 years ago ... unfortunately, I didn't have a camera that time :(

And, I haven't been to Borneo (East Malaysia is part of it) yet. There were some pics of the Sipadan island posted by Fah Mun Kwan just a day or two ago:

Hi david,

Thanks for the link. I you sometimes go back to some nice places don't forget to take your camera to bring back some pics for us.

C YA

David, very nice images. I enjoyed weekends in Malaysia when I lived in Singapore - sometimes to see the F1 race, sometimes just to tour around. I always found people there to be very cooperative about photographs, except in some areas of KL.

My favorite experience was in Malacca. They were hosting the Mr Universe pageant when I was there with my sister and my family. We had a mega-multi-cultural experience. We stood in front of a club in Chinatown in a crowd of sweet little old ladies (Nonyas?), eating noodles, watching a parade of pedicabs and antique cars, each carrying a Mr Universe candidate stripped to the waist, oiled, and flexing, as a Malaysian high school band (can't remember from where) played Yellow Rose of Texas - on bagpipes. The little old ladies were obviously having a blast ogling these obscenely muscled guys, they were laughing and re-creating the poses. Talk about a photographic experience - I filled my compact flash cards in the hour of the parade. I only wish I had the sound of a Malay marching band playing a Texas song on Scottish instruments to accompany the pictures.

And we seriously miss the Malay food.

Make pictures, don't take them - it leaves more for others.

The first 3 pictures here:
http://www.pbase.com/damahuayi
are taken in Sabah, the Northern Borneo state of Malaysia.
This too:

Malaysia is one of 14 federation in the world, I guess you have to minus Yugoslavia now, so that 13 federation. I would say compare with some other faderations, Malaysia is a loose federation which the federal government's control is not that tight, if you compare it with another federation, for example, USA. Like USA, some Malaysia state have their own army, in Malaysian case they are royal army! Yes, Malaysia have royal famalieS, 9 different royal families for 9 state out of the 13+1.

This is especially so for the 2 Borneo states, visitors from the peninsular Malaysia have (even Malaysian citizens) to use passport to travel to the state and get work permission if they have to work that. My immediate family have move to Sabah state for more than 18 years now, but we still have to extend our visa every 6 months.

Talking about our national shame as a colony of alien civilization, I can't help but think of the feeling I felt when in college, one of my friend from Mainland China told me that a Malaysian Chinese student actually talk about the occupation like something to be proud of. I felt so shameful that I almost dug a hole to hide my face.

And now I have a friend from Hong Kong talk about those illegal occupation in similar fashion, every time she mention that, I felt the same way, felt so shameful for her, even though I am not Hong Konger. But I am a Chinese too, it is really shameful to have people from same civilisation which is so unaware of national and cultural pride in an age when the nationalism in the most powerful nation on earth is sky roketing.

I am living in US now, I couldn't imagine an American talk about occupation by fellow civilazation member and present ally (British) the same way, they are aware of the fact of George Washington being the British John Walker, but you will never hear them admit it.
I went to Pulau Tioman 2 years ago ... unfortunately, I didn't have
a camera that time :(

Nice Pics. Makes me want to go there! Nice seeing plant we have in City Greenhouse out in wild! (humming bird shot). I will be posting some hummers here this summer. Friend has feeders setup for them.

Keep posting

David,

All shots are great! I especially love your bugs pics and also the "Lord of The Ring" pic... it is just so green and the colours are well captured with the white balance you set (although I'm not there, I believe that is almost the real scene colour).

I would say that you've cleverly selected Cloudy WB, which is fit to the misty atmosphere at Fraser Hill.

Well done my friend =)

we are born in this once British colony country, so I use to spell "colour" instead of using american "color" ;) Never treat that as a typo as Microsoft Word always did..

I'll dig them up, I think they're on a cdrom someplace. I have to say it's the only time I wanted a movie camera - the sight of muscular guys flexing their pecs to bagpipe music in Chinatown... aiyo.
...where are the Malacca photos? Your little essay, shall I say,
whetted my appetite. Hope you'll be able to post some.

..It really is important to set a proper white balance, and I've learnt much from the DSLR forums. It also seems that a cloudy white balance (or some even go to the extremes of using flash WB) is appropriate for countries further away from the equator. If only I had known that before going on my 2002 Europe trip, my Scotland photos wouldn't have come out looking so cool in terms of colours.

David,

Wonderful shots there.

I have been taking my annual vacation at Camerons for years now, not being aware of this little gem lurking at "the other" highland. (Managed to fill my 256 Mb CF card last year with my new 5700!!!)

Will definitely make a trip there to see these magnificient views for myself.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Cheers.

Nice pics from Fraser hill. I took some with CP4500 and a D30 when I was there December 2002.

Here there are.

All the pictures were taken at Pine Resort where I stayed. The macros were taken with CP4500 ( of course ).

I am from Penang, Malaysia.
