Shot a wedding yesterday. 2 10D's and an assistent.

In the hurry up mode (Bride was 1 hour late for pre wedding pics) to try to get the shoots in.
My assistent forgot to set the cameras to RAW!
About half way through the wedding. I checked to see number of shots left.
Over 100? Checked to see the image size. Large jpg!!!!
I thought Nooooo!
Opened the files this morning. Enlarged them(2) 1 raw and 1 jpg. 8x10
see test image

Could not tell the diff.
Yes lost some due to exposure but overall just great images
The 10D is just a great camera

I have dont the same thing but iso 3200 while shooting star trails.
I was able to fix it because of raw.

If your shots are perfectly exposed with the correct white balance at a low ISO and reasonbly high shutter speed you don't really need it.

Lucky, We did take test shots of every location we were going to use in and around the church.

until we had good histograms and good exposure. had inside and outside CWB. Probably what saved me on this one.

and if she's not your friend at a wedding shoot, you're shot..

Good job, forethought and preparation....

if you take the time to do something urgent, make sure it is important .............................

if something had thrown the white balance it would have been a big headache.
Got ARC the other day...wow!

Tom, I have a friend whose parents are having their 50th wedding anniversary the end of June. I was asked to take the pics with my new 10D. They had looked into a pro and the cost of a thousand dollars was too much for them. They are doing their the hole 9 yards. I see where everyone shoots in the Raw. I have just under two months to get used to this. I have never done it before. Any tips would be helpful and I do like to prepare ahead of time in the things I do. First what mode is it that you shoot in. I have the Canon 28-200 zoom & the 50mm. Would my zoom be ok for this shoot or should I go and rent a different lens. Do you use a light meter and also do you set the stops down one or two. I know I have to go and shoot a lot of shoots but any advice would be of great help.

Glad the shots came out right....and...the sample looks great...but the way I look at it is, you had the hour the bride was late to check the file properties ;-)

Hehe... that's why there's a dedicated 'INFO' button. But yes, I've done that before too - forget to switch ISO and then spend a shot or two wondering why the shutter speed would go up so high :)

The extra time let us shoot all the test shots.
But when you get a little antsy. That is when you forget something.

My Assisant did a Great job! But she had the cameras and She was supposed to set them up. But I know I wont ever forget to check that item again.
I might go get a tatu that says 'RAW' :-)

After the first wedding I shot using RAW, I've always used JPG. When PS8 comes out I figure I'll switch to shooting RAW, but converting 300-400 RAW files was just too much hassle for me.

I used to work as an electrician. As an apprentice...they pounded into our brains..."Don't take anyone elses word that the circuit you're working on is dead....CHECK YOURSELF!"

Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together

That is what we get paid for. I think

I was landing my airplane the other day and the wind changed rapidly. It was catalina Island. I looked over at my friend and said were going around. I gave it full mixture, full throttle and raised the gear and flaps 1 notch at a time.

It wasnt the winds fault. I was flying the airplane.

Well yes I have also been a commericial pilot for over 27 years.
And maybe a Photo Event checklist is truley what is needed.....

Hi,

It actually worries me that I so many posts in these forums from Wedding photographers forgetting this and that......and potentially ruining the photo album.

I know everybody ain't perfect but I just wonder if the advent of digital is taking away some of reliability of the past.
Yes, a check list looks to be a very good idea!

First where is the event? Church, Hotel....
Lighting at event location.
Outside and inside?

Wedding of 80 or more
What I use for outside shots:

Lights. 550ex and ste2, Lumedyne strobes with soft boxes & pocket wizards. One camera with the 550ex and Ste2 The other with the Lumedyne. (400 iso Lumedyne setup was used on the test photo )
Bright day 100 iso an 5.6 125
overcast like this one was 400 iso
Lenses:
135 f/2, 28-70 2.8 and 17-35 2.8.

Posed shots inside the church. Same setup

Actual Ceremony 800 iso(flash not allowed most of the time)
50 1.8, 85 1.8, 135 f2 ( I am feeling the need for a 50 1.4)

You really have to judge each location. Take a lot of light meter readings and make notes. Check the Histogram of test photos!!!! Get them inbounds(nothing going all the way to the end. must see some blue on each end.) and use those settings for the shoot with. we are now using a Digital Calibration target. We get our histograms very well balanced and correct exposure settings from using it. Also set CWB for each location site.

I do not think your 28-200 will deliver the results you want IMHO.

If you rent or borrow lenses. Make sure and use them prior to the event. So you get familiar with the lens.
Hope this helps

Instead of by hand.

with film you took meter readings, Made a judgment call based on your previous shots in similer conditions and relied on the previous results type of film you used. Now You must set up the computer in the camera.
If I had never used film camera's. This would be more natural for me.

Again I have to praise the 10D as this would have been a disaster with any older DSLR except the 1Ds. The jpg simply would not have been big enough to cover the mistake.

This threed was ment to be more of a praise to the camera than blameing my assistent. She did a Great job! It taught me that I could use jpg with some confidence. I have always used RAW in the past.
