I know these two lenses are quite different but I had set my mind on the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 G if I was to purchase a D600.

I have since thought it may be better to get the 16-35mm f4 G because I find myself always wanting wider than I currently have. I use an 18-200mm on DX ( 27mm at widest 35mm?? ).

It is also important that I can use front filters.

I already own a 50mm f1.4 and a 70-200mm f2.8 VR1

Would I be better to forget the 24-85mm, given what I already have?

This is of course a personal decision but to me this seems like an easy choice. You have way too much overlap with the 24-85 and not having 36-49 and 51-69 isn't that big a deal.

16-35 f/4

I would get the 16-35 f4 to better compliment your other lenses. Next, consider the 24-70mm f2.8.

Given that you want wider than your 18 (yes, 27mm equivalent) the 16~35 seems a logical choice. You already have a good standard lens in the 50 and you have a nice tele zoom.

You might also consider a used 17~35mm f2.8. I have a slight preference for it but I suspect I'm in a slight minority. I have used both and I'm confident you'd be very happy with either.

I am also advising you to go for the 16-35 (17-35). Remember that zoom lenses normally is weakest at their two extreme settings. In the this case 24 and 85, so if wide is important to you, then it is an easy choice.

Your 18-200mm is about 27 mm on a DX camera. On a FX camera, a 24mm lens is 24mm. Just making sure that is understood.

I have also been pretty impressed with the 24-85mm kit lens also.
