Hi all

I'm a Brit with a business trip to Chicago area coming in the next couple of weeks. For most of the week I'll be way outside and won't have a chance to see much at all, but I've organised 24 hours in Chicago itself and was wondering two things:

- is there a decent camera shop - I'm sorely tempted to get a Fuji X-E1 while I'm there (save money over UK prices)? I shoot with a 5D II and lenses but thinking about an X-E1 also

- any good spots for photography? I'm thinking about doing the obvious thing and getting up the Willis Tower. Nothing specific in the way of subjects - just be nice to capture a little of the place.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Marcus

Marcus,

Calumet Camera has a location in downtown Chicago 750 N. Rush St.

There is an old style shop, Central Camera 230 S. Wabash.

I don't believe the X-E1 is available in the US yet. I have one on order, not due to ship for a while.

The Chicago Art Institute is worth a few hours, one of the best art museums in the US.

Lots of street photography along Michigan Avenue, and Millennium Park.

Enjoy Chicago, one of my favorite cities.

Appreciated - thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'm looking forward to it - I've been to the USA a lot, but not for years, and never to Chicago. Thanks for the tips on camera shops - I'll check them out.

I've seen some posters in the forums with the X-E1 so wasn't aware it wasn't available there yet - I'll do some research before going. If not - I'll lug along the 5D!

Cheers

Marcus

Pick up an X100. A great little camera, I'm very pleased with mine.

Or you can pick up the xpro1 and enjoy it in Chicago:)

Millenium Park, the Chicago Art Institute and up the street a block the Marina. All great locations.

Also go up Michigan Ave to the river and walk down to the river level and take the Architectural Boat Tour. About $20US and a great boat tour in and around the city with a knowledgeable tour guide talking about the buildings and their history. Takes about 2 hours.

I must have shot 300 images on that tour alone.

Enjoy.

Give me an idea how long you'll be in Chicago, where you'll be staying, and how much time you'll have for photography and I can can give you some specifics.

Here are some ideas on places you can go to photograph in Chicago.

I prefer the view from the John Hancock tower. They have an excellent observation deck with a spectacular view of the shoreline.

If you go to the Adler Planetarium peninsula (bus 146, then a short walk), you can get a spectacular skyline shot.

How long - 24hrs :)

When - end on November

Thanks very much

Impressive - that has to be worth it. Thanks!

From the replies it seems like more than 24 hours would be much better - but I'll grab what I can on what is essentially a free trip (I'm going on business).

Thanks all for advice - some really good tips. I've had the same view elsewhere that the Hancock Tower offers a better view - is cheaper and less busy. So provided it's clear I'll do that. The boat tour also sounds great, and a general walk around the Millenium Park and Michegan Avenue.

Can't wait!

Best to all

Marcus
