Notice that when D800 displays card full, i still have time to change the card and the camera will write on the new card on pics taken, but not written as card was full. Did not notice this behaviour with my D3. Consequence of big files or slow write or 'undocumented feature' (bug?)

I actually found several times that even though the card said full there was more then 50mb of space left on it when I put the card in a computer to download the files. This might be somehow related to your question or a way to ensure that data corruption is minimized since it commonly occurs (I am told) when shooting right to the full mark.

Not related to this thread, but my d800e was able to write to a transcend 128GB SD card.
That should take care of my card full issue for a while. Putting that card in my D5100 did
not work!
