Can anyone recommend an external hard drive. Specifically one that is of very high quality and reliable. I tired of buying junk and then replacing it so I try to buy the best.

We have been using two Maxtor 80gb firewire drives for 2 years and are very happy with them. I know that they also make some in the 250gb range. The prices have dropped quite a bit since we have purchased.

Good Luck,

Bart

We also have two Maxtor firewire drives (150GB each) and they have
performed very well. I THINK we got them about a year ago.

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're probably right.

Oops, meant to say 160gb's.

go to http://www.basoncomputer.com , and take a look at what they've got. i've got four of their 120GB units, two USB2, and two firewire. no reliability problems. cheap enough to use as backup and permanent storage, which is what I got them for - there's no decent data on the survivability of writeable CD or DVD media, formats could go nuts and leave your archives behind, but you can mount a hard drive in the original version of DOS, or even CP/M, and still read the data. Bason computer also gets great customer service ratings.

Basically, everybody selling detachable hard drives is using the same setup - a housing with electronics to convert EIDE drives to be firewire or USB2. the electronics are even made by a common manufacturer across most of the stuff you find in the stores. hard drives are reaching commodity status. at bason, you can even buy housings, and just slip your own choice of hard drives in and out.

To my experience, the firewire seems faster in practical use, but the USB2 are easier for me to use with my laptop, or if I have to hook up to an internet cafe setup.

Make pictures, don't take them - it leaves more for others.

I've stacked a couple of Maxtor firewires rather than put all of my eggs in one basket. But that said I buy what's cheap as I've only had one hard drive fail in the last five years or so.
