hi all

Does anyone know of any investigations done comparing the resolutions and qualities of a zoom vs crop scenario for something equivalent to the C5050 vs the C750?

cheers
Danny

Optical zoom generally wins out over more pixels in most cases. Even a 2MP C-2100 at max zoom will do better than the 5MP 5050 which only has a 3x optical zoom. The C750 will blow the doors off that in terms of putting pixels on a far off target.

Some not so light reading that explains it all:

And a pre-fab spreadsheet to plug in your own numbers and compute the FOM value:

Bish,

Great question! The value of zoom vs crop can be found by applying the concepts of the "figure of merit." While the specific cameras you mention are not in the table provided at this website, you should be able to plug in the values for your cameras into the table and get the answers you are seeking. Here is the site.

I hope this helps and is actually what you are looking for.

When you crop or use digital zoom, you're losing resolution. Personally, I couldn't function without the 10X zoom on my c730.

Though long telephoto is versatile, you don't see people using just one long zoom lens on SLRs. The image quality factor needs to be considered too. If you do not need to shoot far away objects, you will be better off with a shorter focal length lens.
