Hi folks,

Seems like everyone is eager to compare Pentax S witx Casio Exilim Z3 and Canon 400. I haven't found any direct comparison i.r.o. the cameras mentioned in the subject. I was totally interest in getting Pentax S myself (ultra slim works great for me), when in the last moments I stumbled onto Minolta Dimage Xi (and Xt coming out these days).

Any comments would be appreciated.
Thx.

I bought the optio S and then decided to return it and wait for the Xt. I'm actually totally confused so I can't be of any help but am waiting 4 the answers... :)

Hi!

I've done a comparison table of compact cameras for my own purposes - check it out and see if it's usefull [works best on 1280x960].

Ratings concerning (for examle) image quality are based on various reviews, but they DO reflect my own opinions. So be sure to check out different reviews on web sites like...

http://www.dpreview.com
http://www.dcresource.com
http://www.digit.no

...to evaluate the image quality for yourself.

Yeah, I've checked the sample images and they look really nice (as they are supposed to - I think it's impossible to determine image qualiy based on "promo" pictures)

There's one strange thing, though. The fireworks sample picture is said to have a shutter speed of 63 seconds - that should be impossible to do with the Xt, as the maximum exposure time is 4 seconds...
The Xt might be the ticket. I'm still waiting.

Seee sample images at this site

I thought the same thing and I checked it with Exif Reader. It is actually 1.6 seconds. Exif Reader is a free stand alone executable that requires no installation. You can drag and drop an image from your browser into it to view the Exif data. It is available here: http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/

By the way, looking at the thumbnail, I thought those were fireworks too. Looking at the full size image, they appear to be neon tubes arranged around a sphere on a pole. They look pretty cool.

Regards,
Mark

The difference between the OptioS and the Xi is quite dramatic, in
particular, the 2 late afternoon shots. If the Xt is anywhere near
the Xi, then it might be my next pocket camera.

It is the truth Pentax S is still a bit smaller, and I was in a way perhaps already prepared to reconcile it's possibly a bit poorer picture quality, but when browsing to many sample photos I became more and more convinced that image quality suffers too much, despite it's really appealing design and truly pocket size.

Comparison of the Resolution Chart picture sample confirmed that S gives far worst results (I'm still a bit sad about that) as can be seen on the DPReview site, but I consider this test picture as quite important. I admit some pictures looked pretty nice on web though, but I must admit I am going for the Minolta Xt now for sure. I find the possibility of taking pictures with their underwater housing quite exciting as well.

I think Minolta may have a killer of a camera with the Xt.
Longer slow shutter (4 sec.) coupled with a noise reduction.

A camera that's only 15mm taller and 20g heavyer than the OptioS would still fill my needs.

And in the metallic red for me, please.

Jeff.

Some colors would be nice indeed. Sony is playing cool with blue color, but I'm sure others can do much more (just look at handy phones market), why not for cameras as well.

I do hope Xt will be out really soon.
