Hi Folks

I have a D7 + IR filter, and some nice red images. Please what do I do next.

Daniella is responsible for all my woe's, She's totally sold me on IR with her beautiful IR photo's.

huh....can you show some samples? My guess is that you either have the wrong filter, or you are using too long exposure.

to compare, here is a sample of how my photos come out of the camera, with saturation +2.

I use white balance thungstene and saturation -2 and then get this instead:

Do you have the Hoya R72? what filter do you use?

Those 2 photos are straight out of the camera. Infrared photos need editing. You can do all sort of editing as simple as auto-level and convert to grayscale or to be more complex.

Here is my workflow:

take correct exposure between 1/6s to 1/45s depending on light and subject. Use white balance thungstene and saturation -2.

1. Open it in Photohop and do auto-level.

2. Swap the red and blue channel to get back the blue sky.

3. If needed do auto-color.

4. then create a new layer with blending mode "color" to color correct or tint what is needed.

You can also convert it to grayscale if you prefer black and white.

Here is a very weird photo I took near the Golden Gate bridge. Not sure I like it but I did not saw the extend of the invasion until I opened the file in Photoshop...those trees are invaded by rampant vegetation all over!

Yes I use the Hoya R72, however if I use auto levels I get a nice white hole not as bad as using the D7i but bad enough.

My initial test shots have come out similar to your example, unfortunately where I live in the UK there is not much in the way of greenery on the trees as yet.

Hopefully with the information you have provided I should be able to achieve a reasonable result.
Many thanks

Harry

Infrared is gives nice contrast in black and white even if there is not much vegetation but surely the subject is everything with IR. You cannot just go in a denuded wood and shoot IR and expect the result to be superb. You can shoot some coast with rocks and get some nice result. fluffy clouds on blue sky are very nicely contrasting.

In these photos I got a very nice dark sky and contrast and there was not much vegetation:

strange. I get a little the center somehow a little litter but it is not as much lighter than it is different in hue.

Getting the result that I get takes some effort. It is not a point and shoot situation where the photos come out with the colors that I get. My final result is my personal touch :)

At the begining if you have too much problem to do color IR, maybe you can start with black and white? the central spot pretty much disapear when converted to grayscale because it is more of a hue difference than a value difference.

My what was this English garbage? sorry I am still sleepy :)

Here is what I meant...

Strange. I get a little bit of center spot but it is more a difference in hue than a real different in value (darkness). so if you convert the image to grayscale, that disapear and the image seems more uniform.

Again many thanks Daniella

I guess that I've already found out that IR is not point and shoot photography.

During the next few days I will spend some time on this and see what I can come up with.

will post back later this week and let you know if I have progessed, and if I dare I will post an example.

Harry

sure do :) I would like to see it and help you on your starting :)

Hi Daniella...
Greate pictures you have, beautiful blue sky color.

Sorry for this Question!

I'm trying to do it, but I can't, How can I "Swap" red and blue channels in Photoshop?

Thank you.

Roberto Ayala.

You use the channel mixer and set the red to 0% blue 100% for the red and you set the blue to 0% and red to 100% for the red.
1. Open it in Photohop and do auto-level.

2. Swap the red and blue channel to get back the blue sky.

3. If needed do auto-color.

4. then create a new layer with blending mode "color" to color

sorry, you do the opposite for the blue 0% for the blue and 100% for the red.
