Sigma Lenses

Hello ritz (and others above ;-),

Thanks ...
The 70-200 f2.8 is definatly a superb lens!
(btw, the first "testalbum" is online now at BD ...).
I just love my Sigma "EX" lenses.

The 28-300 isn't an "EX" quality lens, but does a better job than I expected. I've seen results from the Tamron 28-300 and the Sigma has less CA and delivers sharper images with more brilliant colours.

Kind regards,
Jaja

I'm a "heavy" Sigma lenses user ;-) (with the Canon 10D and D60).
At this moment, I have the 17-35mm, 70-200mm f2.8, 50-500mm and the
28-300mm (testing).
Overall, I'm very pleased with these lenses.
The 50-500mm is my absolute favourite and one of the most used.
The 17-35mm is pretty well when using f8.0 or above - although I
use it also at f2.8 for very nearby shots with very limited DOF -
and it performswell.
The 70-200 f2.8 is here since yesterday - and since it's raining -
so no chance for testing ...

A lot of 50-500mm shots can be found on our website:
http://www.belgiumdigital.com
Choose in the menu on the left "bd crew albums" and than Canon 10D
or D60.

Kind regards,
Jaja
I am consider buying a EX 2.8/70-200 or a 4.0/100-300 + 2x extender
but I can´t decide wich one.
I would like to see some pictures taken with those two.
ritz
Hi Jaja, I have seen the pictures Absolut great did you try the 2x
extender?
for me 200mm is not enough. the 500 make great picture but it´s
heavy 1.9 kg. list price on 300 and 500 seems same the 200 is 300€
under.
Have seen picture w/ 2x extender on the 200 some was sharp and some
not.You loose 2 f: w/2x that´s means you have to stop down to a
last f:8 on the 200mm. The 100-300 make sharp w/f:5.6.
wich one of the 3 lens should I buy? silly question en the end
it´s only me who can deside. Still I like light strong lens,
special for sports. It´s not a easy to deside.

I have seen other galleries, but Jaja whatever you use the 200 0r
the 500
yours is the sharpest, thats the difference for some who knows how
to use a camera and who did´t.

Hello rick,

Well, the first results are just amazing: the 70-200 f2.8 is the sharpest lens I have now ... (and I also have a Canon 50mm f1.8 ;-)

Just one "funny" observation: both the 70-200 f2.8 and the 50-500mm need and underexposure of about 1.0 to get the best results.
Nothing dramatic, but just a fact ...
But that 70-200mm f2.8 ... WOW!

Kind regards,
Jaja
Jaja: When you test the 70-200 could you please post the results
to this site if you could. Your site was a big factor in my
decision to buy the 50-500. Say "thanks" to all.

Hello ritz,

I would go for the 50-500 mm.

It's quality will be seriously better as the 70-200 with the 2xextender - although I didn't test that combo yet.
I will perform a test as soon as possible ...

Kind regards,
Jaja

Interesting..my 70-200 is about as sharp as my 50-500 and no more. I am convinced I have a vgd 50-500 as far as manufacturing goes. My 70-200 I expected to be sharper base upon web pictures. Maybe I got a slightly sub-par one or maybe my expectations were too high. Check out my lens tests and tell me what you think:

http://www.lightreflection.com/ and click on the lens test button on the bottom left. I have 70-200 and then 70-200 vs 50-500. one issue is that the 50-500 focuses closer than the 70-200 so the images are bigger at close focus and i didn't equalize them. I am off to Arizona with my whole crop of lenses so the 70-200 will get a good workout.

Preliminary tests show my 180mm underexposes by an average of .7 stop. I will shoot that more also.

Thanks

Rick

http://www.lightreflection.com/ and click on the lens test button on the bottom left.
Rick, your lens reviews all mention stuff like "F32 and above are extremely soft with all lenses." Isn't that what you would expect for diffraction-limited optics? Are they any less sharp than a perfect lens would be? You should start to see a little softening due to diffraction about f/16, where the radius of the Airy disk (to first null) is about the size of a pixel.

The main thing to watch for at high f-numbers is lateral chromatic aberration. From what I've seen, it varies all over the place with zooms, and is pretty well controlled with primes. This is what typically limits sharpness in the corners for lenses when they're stopped down, where all the other aberrations are small (lateral CA doesn't go to zero as the aperture goes to zero).

Thanks for reviewing the lenses; I look forward to more "field tests".

Thanks...I was mainly testing comparitve sharpness but I would be glad to expand that although I would probably need some assistance and advice.
