I am consider buying a EX 2.8/70-200 or a 4.0/100-300 + 2x extender
but I can´t decide wich one.
I would like to see some pictures taken with those two.

From what I've heard, the 2x extender will certainly disappoint,
while the 1.4x is not so bad.

My tests of the 2x and other comments indicate that it's best function in life is as a paperweight. The 1.4 is better but I haven't heard anyone jumping up and down about it. I have an old Kenko 2x converter I tested on my S1 and it was much better relatively speaking, and actually usable!! I would tend to go for the longer lens - the 100-300. If you have the 28-70, you wll be missing between 119 and 170 (50mm) which you can easily work around, versus not missing anything with the 70-200 and not having the extra length you get with the 300.

I agree to this and would like to add that the EX 4/100-300 got better ratings then the EX2.8/70-200 in terms of sharpeness.

how does the 4/100-300 rate in action shots? What about dept of field? The proper terminology slips me at the moment b/c i'm at work.. But can you get nice blurry backgrounds... and sharp focus on the main subject?

Well I don't know about the bokeh of this lens and could not find sample pictures that were big enough to judge this but it should be ok.

This Lens it came out second in a very tough competition in the german colorfoto, the only lens that was better was a Leica 4.2/105-280 (as far as I remeber it) that sold for far more than the double price and the Sigma was really close.

On http://www.photographyreview.com so far the only complaint is that it is to big and heavy (except for one guy who maybe got a bad one).

And here is another test:
http://www.naturephotographers.net/je1001-2.html

The EX lenses are simply darn good, so good that you see them around on many DSLRs in the other forums :)

You probably won't use the 70-200 at f2.8 based upon what I have seen.

The question becomes how the 100-400 does at f4.0. On my Sigma, I avoid f2.8 on most of the lenses that have it. Just look at 2.8 for the lenses I have tested. You give up a lot of sharpness. The one thing we should do is shoot the same shot at 2.8 and 4.0 and do two prints at least 8x10 and compare! For some reason, it seems to me that film is more forgiving. BTW, I have heard nothing but positives about the 100-300. I have been a little skeptical but after the 50-500. Although the 70-200 holds up well in comparison to the 50-500 and the 28-70 at the comparable ranges, I expected more based on some Canon posts. If I am careful with the 50-500 I can generally get the same quality out of it.

I went on http://www.adorama.com , and bhphotovideo... I've not seen the 100-400EX...

I'll set my eye on the 70-200 F2.8 EX. You're right EX rules :)

So now if my 'subject' gets too far, i'll just have to walk after him/her...

the 4/100-300 is abit soft at f4, not too bad, according to the tests still usable.

An email from Sigma Corp. tells me the new 80-400 Optical Stablized zooom will be available in June. I'm holding off on my zoom purchase until I can see some samples / read some reviews / test this lens. Here's the skinny: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/Html/news/80-400os.htm

I think I saw a preview price at Adorama or B&H of US$999. I'm also saving for the 15-30mm EX, I think I'll get more use from that than from the 14mm prime, plus its a bit cheaper.

Thats it...

We need to start a collection here.. TOO many choices .. :Þ i'm just gonna go back to 'penny pincher' mode and restock my piggie bank.. :Þ

Or maybe I'll rent lens for special occassions that require 'supa duba zoom' :Þ

I hope I can get the 15-30 and the primes (50+105) in HK in the summer... but maybe SARS and the Airline will put an end to this dream and I have to buy something here...

I just wondered why they don't use the ELD Glas in those lenses (EX2.8/70-200, EX4.5-5.6/80-400 OS, EX4/100-300) they use it in all the tele primes (EX2.8/300, EX4.5/500, EX5.6/800mm)

It is ok, to be fair it is not as sharp as some reviews see it but it is much sharper than my old crappy Sigma Lenses (DL , etc.), nearly all my shoots you have seen so far were made with this lens.

Nice somebody want to answer, They did not on Canon SLR.

I have thoose lenses: Sigma 15-30, Canon 3,5/28-105 USM, and Canon 4-5,6/100-300 USM.
I don´t like my 100-300, the 28-105 can do, but of cause not best.
My choice is not so easy, because 200mm is to little for some thing.
I allso consider the 50-500mm.

f2,8 is great and the 70-200 is a great lens, but if I not can use the 2x extender (paperweight) it´s bad. My 100-300 canon can do if I stop down to f16-27, but still not good enough.
Rick nice pictures.

Hello ritz,

I'm a "heavy" Sigma lenses user ;-) (with the Canon 10D and D60).

At this moment, I have the 17-35mm, 70-200mm f2.8, 50-500mm and the 28-300mm (testing).
Overall, I'm very pleased with these lenses.
The 50-500mm is my absolute favourite and one of the most used.

The 17-35mm is pretty well when using f8.0 or above - although I use it also at f2.8 for very nearby shots with very limited DOF - and it performswell.

The 70-200 f2.8 is here since yesterday - and since it's raining - so no chance for testing ...

A lot of 50-500mm shots can be found on our website:
http://www.belgiumdigital.com
Choose in the menu on the left "bd crew albums" and than Canon 10D or D60.

Kind regards,
Jaja

Hi Jaja, I have seen the pictures Absolut great did you try the 2x extender?

for me 200mm is not enough. the 500 make great picture but it´s heavy 1.9 kg. list price on 300 and 500 seems same the 200 is 300€ under.

Have seen picture w/ 2x extender on the 200 some was sharp and some not.You loose 2 f: w/2x that´s means you have to stop down to a last f:8 on the 200mm. The 100-300 make sharp w/f:5.6.

wich one of the 3 lens should I buy? silly question en the end it´s only me who can deside. Still I like light strong lens, special for sports. It´s not a easy to deside.
