local Canon's focus test set up, (image).

and inquired about a part and was greeted with "are you an authorized repair agent" or something similar. Replied "yes", then was asked for my account number. Talked my way out of that but if this happens to anyone who has never bought from Canon parts before then just hang up and call back. Hopefully you'll get someone else who doesn't ask questions. It all depends on who you speak with it seems unless they have really changed their policy which I doubt.

I wanted a serice manual for 10D, so I inquired and got this in reply:

To test for AF calibration, you want the most contrasty object you can find, preferably in the best light you can find.
How often can we have such kind of contrast in real life shot ? I
should have suggest them to use more reasonable contrast target for
testing.

keep calling the parts place and sooner or later someone will give you the part number and sell you if available. Just getting the part number even if they refuse to sell is a fisrt step. Armed with the part number the next time will make things easier. Trust me, just con your way through.

Though I was for quite some time.

A perfectly calibrated camera/lens can still misfocus (and usually will) when the lighting/contrast gets low.
That means the Canon Technician took my 24-70L out to this thing
several times to adjust focus. I still remember he said some like
"already 1 scale forwards still rear?" It seems what he get
calibrated on this scale did not turn out to be good in real life.
He was quite puzzle.

the targets are so close (around 1 meter) and they are so contrasty subjects like Canon 511, 77mm Front cap, PCMCIA card, big black letters on white paper, gundan model, 50mm lens etc.
