Just arrived today, my new 300mm IS lens. Quick question. It makes some funny noises. Now I know it's the IS making the noise, but it's much louder than that in the 28-135IS I briefly owned which was barely audible, even up close. This makes quite a pronounced whirring that is easily audible a few inches from the lens. I suspect that it's completely normal, but please put my mind at rest :)

The more worrying noise is as the IS starts up on a half press. It makes a fairly pronounced clunk, then goes into it's much quieter whirring. On releasing from a half press, there is a short delay, then another clunk as the IS cuts out. On reframing whilst half pressed (or generally moving the camera around), it again makes the occasional clunk. It all sounds rather agricultural, but not having had a lens like this before, I want to make sure before I get told by the camera dealer that it's normal :)

It's all IS related, as if I turn that off, no noises.

Appreciate any owner's comments. Is it duff, or normal?

Some IS lenses seem a bit louder than others. I wouldn't worry about it. Unless it's waking the dead, of course. ;)

No, nothing that bad :) It wasn't so much the whirring, but the clonk on IS start and stop that was more worrying. But if it's normal, it's normal and I'll get on with my revision! MSc finals at the moment, no time to be worrying about expensive lenses!

Just got off the phone to my dealer and he says it doesn't sound right, and he's not experienced the same noises with his own IS lenses. He's ordered me up a new one from Canon, and let me use the old one till it arrives.

More than happy with that kind of Service.

lol, over at

http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB8&Number=126980&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post127090 I got a completely different set of responses saying that it was abnormal!

Think I might ask for a swap to be on the safe side!
