I am real happy with how this turned out so I thought I would share it with all of you. She is my 2 year old Boxer. Her name is HeyLee. She has become one of my favorite subjects to photograph as well as a heck of a special friend.

Great shot - lighting is just right on hte face. Its a shame about the highlight on the chest though.

Dont know if you like to 'print what you shoot' or edit you shots etc but i think the only possible improvement would be to tone down the highlight so it doesnt draw the eye so much or alternitevely crop it to a headshot.
None-the-less a shot to be proud of,
all the best,
C

the natural looking light is great, Greg, although (as said before) a bit too bright on the chest. But you caught the essence of a boxer: their very serious looks. My grandmother used to have boxers, and I know how wonderful they are (at least to people they know), even with little children.

Hi Greg,

A nice looking dog. I like the way you used the high contrast light to good advantage in this interesting dog portrait.

Hey Greg, thanx, I agree about the bright white chest. I was sitting here in my computer chair this morning when HeyLee came running across the room to look out the front window. I could not help notice the lighting from the sun on her and so fortunately the camera was right next to me. I liked the results and was a bit too quick to post it before examining it. I was able to fix it quite well in PS Elements later. I will continue to edit it a bit furthur and if it is what I am hoping for I may repost. I appreciate all the feedback from the people here.

Very nice photograph, very nice to see a boxer with natural ears. I used to work semi-pro for the canine press in the UK and loved taking boxer head studies. Just a little more interest in where she was looking and that right ear would have come around perfectly. I also think it is very important to see both eyes, which you have done. Most of my work was done in black and white, but an accident 10 years ago forced me to give up the paying photography, so now I just mess around with digital. If you would like to see my dogs, Field Spaniels, they can be found on

Sorry I can't put singles on the forum, that's still way above me!

Greg,

Why did you put such a lovely shot on the forum. I've found myself in the loft looking at old 645 negs, I'm even thinking of getting a neg scanner and cursing that I've got rid of the darkroom. Thanks for your earlier advice.

Hi Greg,

Great looking dog and I like the way it came out as well.

BTW the way you write that makes it sound like it was either a fluke or that you would do not feel confident to do it again, I am sure that is not what you meant !! :-)

Some of my favoirite faces are dogs :-)

No, it was not a fluke. I was fortunate enough to turn and see her as she ran to the window and could not help noticing the way the light was hitting her face. It was appealing to me and it was pretty fortunate that my camera, a Sony F717 was close by. As for doing it again, I would want to be awake early in the AM when the sun was coming up shining through the window. As for getting HeyLee to pose for me, I am sure she would co operate. I think we need to have the natural light to get the portrait right. Thanks for your reply.
