Out with the camera today and stumbled on some nice looking dragonflies. After a lot of waiting and hunting (like the G2 auto-focus :) I got the shot below and a couple of others. With a B+W +5 close-up lens.

Sometimes I feel an urge to get a used D30/D60, but I wonder how much additional stuff I would need to get good macros... I have a 28-135IS USM lens for canon. I would think I would need more. Does anyone have a D30 and some experience with G1/G2/G3? What's good, what's bad? Would it just be a short lived step before 10D "must" be purchased...

Anyway, here's the shot.

Very nice shot of the dragonfly! I've tried many times to get one on 'digital film', but the little buggers are so flighty! :-)

As for the D30, since you already have at least one Canon lens, it might not be such a bad idea if you can find a D30 cheap enough..

Sincerely, Bob the Printer

Bob,

Thanks for the comment.

And yes, if now "cheap enough" was easy to define :) I understand the problem the original owners are faced with when they part from a camera that costed up to $3000. What would you say is a "cheap" price? I was thinking of max $700 or so. Much more and D60 is too close... and of course, soon thereafter 10D is getting close...

Nice shot! Here's a dragonfly via my 10D (used to own a G2, nice camera, wish I had kept it for party shots etc)-

Wow,

that's a lucky one. So sharp. I must say that your "watermark" is a little too distracting for me. I understand why you put it there, but at these small resolutions, is there really that much use of a picture?

Anyway. Impressive web-site also.

Sonny,

what strength is the close-up? One or many stacked? That shot is good, although in my taste a little too close.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice shot. I wonder how you manage with the focus. I suppose that this is manual focus ? I find it's really a pain to do the manual focusing, especially out in bright sunlight.
