717 is HORRIBLE.....

Just wanted to add that the noise you see arn't that noticable on
actual prints. I don't really like running images thru NI as it
usually makes the image look funny to my eyes. Keep a close eye on
the exposure and try to avoid underexposing (@ the same time don't
overexpose too much where detail is fully blown out).
I wanted to add my agreement here. Neat Image is great if you have a really noisy pic that you just have to save, but I would not run pictures through it as a rule. It really does soften some of that great Zeiss sharpness out of pics. And T is right, it doesn't usually show up in prints or at normal viewing size. Also, go back and look at some of your film pictures. You will see there is actually more "grain" in the shadows of many of those than in prints from the 717.

Yehuda, I couldn't have said it better. I'm sorry dv, but I am seeing some poor composition, what looks like poor manual camera settings (or simply shots taken in less than adequate lighting), and some handheld shots that are subject to shaky hands.

Overall, I would take the camera back if I were you and get a camera to learn on. A P series, S series or whatever. These shots are not the fault of the camera.

Maybe what is horrible is not the camera but...

? You're entitled to your opinion ..... but it's definitely in the minority
Man, I thought I would be able to refrain from posts like this but
I am VERY disappointed...not sure if it is all 717's...would think
not, or if it is this particular one.....great shots indoor with
flash....HORRIBLE outside....Pictures out of camera are awful...I'm
sorry guys, but I will be returning this....but unsure whether I
will trade it for another one, or something else....unless someone
can point out what am doing wrong...these are all in the auto mode
AND on a tripod...

look at the shaded areas....the underside of her arm and her
face...this is NOT acceptable and I have done nothing post proc
except copy straight from camera to computer and then upload to
web....t

the non flash is horrible...the one with flash is just a bit
better...is this typical of the 717? or is it this particular
one?... the 7i I sold, did not have this prob.....i am really
trying to like this camera....thanks..t

sorry for the negativity, but I am just disappointed..view at full
size...click properties for exif info photos going up right
now...give it acouple secs..

There is a veil of kindness and compliments on this forum that is often pierced by antagonism at the mear mention of anything negative about SONY. Point is, it's just a camera, there are better ones out there now, and there will be better ones to come.
I smell a troller...
Taking a picture in worst case senario and blaming the camera...
Bright sunny day, white dress and skin tones, shadow areas, grass
in harsh sunlight, and all done in auto mode... HELLO
sounds more like someone who is trying to learn than a troll.
people are throwing that title around a lot here lately, when it
hasnt been appropriate.

I see the 717/707 as a very good compromise.
if you compare it to a DSLR it is much lighter smaller and cheaper.
but takes good enogh pictures.

or to a compact camera, ex Pentax optio 430, it is much heavier but still light weight enough to carry around and takes much better pictures in all conditions, but you can´t fit ypur 717 in your pocket. And it is much more expensive

But I see no point in racking down on 717/707 for poor picture quality.
